Taxonomy. Original description: Leuciscus parvus Temminck & Schlegel, 1846: 215 View in CoL , pl. 102, figs. 3, 3a–b [Nagasaki, Kyushu, Japan; lectotype: RMNH 2634; lectotype selected by Boeseman (1947: 164)].— Afghanistan synonyms: None.—Revisions: Berg (1949: 636).—Illustration: Berg (1949: 636, fig. 388).
Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by Moravec and Amin (1978); confirmed by Coad (1981: 11; 2014: 318).—Afghanistan materials: None.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Khanabat.—General distribution: East Asia: Japan and China; widely introduced in Europe and Asia.—Habitat: This species occurs in a wide variety of habitats, most abundantly in well-vegetated small river channels, ponds, and small lakes. This species feeds on small insects, fish and fish eggs, and plant material. It usually breeds in habitats with still or very slow-flowing water. It is regarded as a pest that competes with the larvae of other species due to its high reproductive rate. Freshwater, brackish.
Economic importance. No commercial importance.
Reasons of introduction. Unknown: Inadvertently introduced by transboundary waterways for no known reason or method.
Conservation. Not relevant (introduced species).
