Taxonomy. Original description: Poecilia latipes Temminck & Schlegel, 1846: 224 , pl. 103, fig. 5 [ Japan; lectotype: RMNH 2713a; lectotype selected by Boeseman (1947: 168)].— Afghanistan synonyms: Aplocheilus latipes ( Temminck & Schlegel, 1846) .—Revisions: Magtoon & Termvidchakorn (2009: 54).—Illustration: Temminck & Schlegel (1846: pl. 103, fig. 5) as Poecilia latipes .
Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by Bartley (2006); confirmed by Coad (1981: 8; 2014: 318).—Afghanistan materials: None.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Tedzhen River, Karakum Canal.—General distribution: East Asia: Japan and Korea; introduced elsewhere.—Habitat: This species occurs in ponds, marshes, paddy fields, and small, slow-moving streams in the plains. It is known to prefer a paddy landscape in which diverse water bodies offer different habitat patches. It inhabits mainly lowland and brackish waters, being able to withstand a wide range of salinity. Freshwater.
Economic importance. Valuable for the aquarium trade.
Reasons of introduction. Ornamental fish industry.
Conservation. Not relevant (introduced species).
Remarks: According to Coad (2014) this record probably Oryzias sinensis Chen, Uwa & Chu 1989 . It should be clarifying fieldtrip.
