Zosterodasys caudatus ( Kahl, 1933) Jankowski, 2007
( Figs 5 View FIGURE 5 F, G)
Chilodontopsis caudata Kahl, 1933: 66 , fig. 6, 22; Kahl 1935: 826, fig. 152, 21 (taxonomic revision). Zosterodasys caudatus – Jankowski 2007: 729 (combining author).
Diagnosis. Length about 60–80 µm in vivo. Body shape narrowly obovate with tail-like posterior end curved rightwards. Macronucleus ellipsoidal with a single globular micronucleus. A single contractile vacuole in midbody on left ventral side. Marine.
Type locality. Sand from the saline bay of the town of Kiel, Germany.
Type material. No type material available from Kahl’s specimens.
Etymology. Not given in the original description. The Latin adjective caudat · us, - a, - um ([m, f, n]; tailed) obviously refers to the tail-like posterior body end.
Remarks. Jankowski (2007) combined C. caudata with Zosterodasys , mandatorily changing the species group-name to masculine gender [Articles 30.2.4, 31.2 and 34.2 of the ICZN (1999)]. However, the generic home of this ciliate is doubtful because Kahl (1935) mentioned in his revision that the dorsal side is atypical as it is differentiated into a lateral flattened fringe with bristles and a dorsal hump very likely without cilia. Further, details on the structure and exact course of the synhymenium are not known. Full redescription and neotypification is recommended because several important data (i.e., details of somatic and oral ciliary pattern, number of nematodesmal rods, and morphometry) and type material are lacking.
