Apanteles yolandarojasae Fernández-Triana 2014
( Figure 13 View FIGURE 13 )
Material examined: 3 females, “ 30.iv.1966 —San Pablo, Brasil. Travassos Filho col. S./ Stenomatidae . Apanteles stenomae Muesebeck Det. De Santis ” ( MZSP 56548 View Materials , 56549 View Materials , 56550 View Materials ) . 2 males, same data except " 25.iv.1966 " ( MZSP 56551 View Materials , 56552 View Materials )
Biology. In Costa Rica, the species has been reared as a gregarious parasitoid in Depressariidae (Stenomatinae) — Antaeotricha spp. and Gonioterma latipennis . Brazilian specimens are possibly gregarious in Gonioterma chlorina Kearfott, 1911 and G. exquisita Duckworth, 1964 ( Depressariidae , Stenomatinae ) ( De Santis, 1967).
Comments. After examination of the specimens identified by Luiz De Santis (1967), we conclude that the correct identity of the specimens is A. yolandarojasae , instead of A. stenomae . Most evidently, A. yolandarojasae has a shorter ovipositor, with sheaths about as long as metatibia, as compared to a longer ovipositor in A. stenomae , with sheaths at least 1.3 × longer than metatibia, and the posterior width of T2 about 4.0 × its mid-length, compared to 2.5 × in A. stenomae . Both species’ main hosts are Stenomatinae , but hosts of A. yolandarojasae do not include Stenoma , the only known host for A. stenomae . There is not enough information in the literature to ascertain whether A. stenomae is a gregarious species, precluding us from using this information to further differentiate these two species. In conclusion, the only known record for A. stenomae in Brazil is not accurate, and the specimens should be treated as A. yolandarojasae . The correct placement of A. stenomae in the species groups proposed by Fernández-Triana et al. (2014) is uncertain. Although placement in adelinamoralesae is not discarded, the shape of T2, 2.5 × wider than long, is outside the range observed for the group. The specimens of A. yolandarojasae from Brazil, are very similar to the Costa Rican type specimens. However, the mesoscutellar disc is rugose marginally, whereas, in the holotype specimen, the disc is mostly smooth with punctured margins.
