Guyalna bonaerensis ( Berg, 1879) View in CoL

Fidicina bonaerensis Berg 1879: 140 View in CoL (Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Entre Rios Provinces, Argentina and Uruguay).

Remarks. Uhler (1903) reported the species from British Guiana along with localities in Argentina, southeastern Brazil (Chapada which is likely), Amazonian Brazil (Santarem which is unlikely), and Paraguay. The species is associated with the Chaco, Espinal and Monte floristic provinces in Argentina ( Sanborn et al. 2011). Although the Chaco floristic region extends northward across Paraguay and into southern and eastern Brazil ( Morrone et al. 2022), the specimens from Santarem and British Guiana would need to change habitat affiliation in order to inhabit the different floristic region of these localities. It is apparent that Uhler (1903) included multiple species under the name.

His confusion of the taxon is supported by his description of the specimen from British Guiana. Uhler (1903) reports the southern specimens as exhibiting dwarfed dimension to the specimen from British Guiana which he reports as being larger than Fidicina mannifera ( Fabricius, 1803b) . Fidicina mannifera is larger than Guyalna bonaerensis . He also states that the specimen from British Guiana can be distinguished by the “unusual prominence of its eyes” ( Uhler 1903). These two factors suggest Uhler (1903) is actually referencing a species of Majeorona Distant, 1905b and not Guyalna bonaerensis . As a result, Guyalna bonaerensis is removed from the cicada fauna of Guyana.

Distribution. The species is distributed in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay ( Ruffinelli 1970; Sanborn 2011b; Sanborn & Heath 2014; Nunes et al. 2023).
