40. Euxolus viridis var. polygonoides Moquin-Tandon (1849: 274) View in CoL
Type (lectotype here designated):— INDONESIA. Java, s.d., Zolliger 1646 (G00098622 [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/adetail.php?id=119225&base=img&lang=en).
= Amaranthus emarginatus Moquin-Tandon ex Uline & Bray (1894: 319) var. emarginatus .
‒ Amaranthus polygonoides Zollinger ex Moquin-Tandon (1849: 274) View in CoL , nom. inval. (Art. 36.1c).
‒ Amaranthus emarginatus Salzmann ex Moquin-Tandon (1849: 274) View in CoL , nom. inval. (Art. 36.1c).
Nomenclatural notes:— Moquin-Tandon (1849: 274) provided a short diagnosis (“foliis multo minoribus rhombeoovatis vel orbiculari-rhombeis viridibus aut purpurascentibus”), the provenance and two collectors (“ In Java (Zolling.!), Brasilia (Salzm.!) ”), and the names “ Amaranthus polygonoides Zolling. View in CoL ! Pl. Jav. N. 1646, non Linn. ”, and “ A. emarginatus Salzm. View in CoL ! pl. exs. ”. The author listed two possible specimens (collected by H. Zollinger, and P. Salzmann) that are part of the original material. According to the Art. 9.5 they are syntypes. I have not been able to trace the Salzmann’s specimen, while the Zollinger’s one is preserved at G (barcode 00098622), bearing one plant collected in Java and numbered as “1646”. This number was also indicated by Zollinger (1854: 109), which Moquin-Tandon probably referred in the protologue. I here designated the Zollinger’s exsiccatum at G as the lectotype of the name Euxolus viridis var. polygonoides View in CoL .
Taxonomical notes:—On the basis of the morphology of the lectotype, and the current concept (see e.g., Iamonico 2015, Iamonico & Das 2014), E. virdis var. polygonoides is to be referred to Am. emarginatus var. emarginatus .
The Moquin-Tandon’ names “ Amaranthus polygonoides Zollinger ” and “ Amaranthus emarginatus Salzmann ” were published in the Candolle’s Prodromus for the first time. Since they are reported as synonyms, they are invalid according to the Art. 36.1c.
