3. Acnida cannabina var. lanceolata Moquin-Tandon (1849: 277) View in CoL , nomen illeg. et superfl. (Art. 52.1 Ex. 11 of the ICN)
Type (lectotype here designated):— U.S.A. Caroline, s.d., Bosc s.n. (P00609933 [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at
http://dsiphoto.mnhn.fr/sonnerat/LAPI/scanL/L20080424/P00609933.jpg). = Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) J.D. Sauer (1955: 18) ≡ Acnida tuberculata Moquin-Tandon (1849: 277) . Type (lectotype designated by Iamonico 2016a):— SWITZERLAND. Genéve, Hort. Genéve, September 1847, Reuter s.n. (G221914/1!
and G221914/2!).
Nomenclatural notes:— Moquin-Tandon (1849: 277−278) reported in synonymy the legitimate name Am. macrocaulos Poiret (1810: 314) . According to the Art. 52.1 (Ex.11) of the ICN, the new variety name is superfluous and illegitimate. Poiret (1810: 314) provided a short dagnosis (“ Amaranthus racemis compositis , filiformibus; foliis lanceolatis, acuminatis; caule crassissimo (N.) ”, where “ N. ” means “Nobis”), a detailed description, the provenance (“ Caroline ”), and the collector (“ Bosc ”). In the Poiret’s Herbarium at P there is one specimen (barcode 00609933) bearing a part of a probable terminal branch, and an original label with the annotation “ Amaranthus macorcaulos…Tiges de 8 à 10 pieds, grosses comme la cuisse caroline. Bosc. Herb. Poiret ”. The exsiccatum shows features that match the diagnosis and it is here designated as the lectotype of the name Amaranthus macrocaulos that is also, consequently, the type of Ac. cannabina var. lanceolata .
Taxonomical notes:—The diagnostic character proposed by Moquin-Tandon (1849) to distinguish this variety (“ foliis lanceolatis ”) has not taxonomic value according to the current concept in Am. tuberculatus (Moq.) J.D. Sauer (= Ac. cannabina L.; see e.g., Pratt & Clark 2001, Costea & al. 2005). The general morphology of P00609933 resembles Am. tuberculatus , and I here propose to synonymize these two names.
