Description: Perennial or annual herbs rarely subshrubs or forming a dense cushion armed with the spine-tipped peduncles; wings longer than calyx, a pod with flattened crest and semi-ovate to semiglobular, with 3–8 teeth (rarely without teeth) on the crest, discs with or without teeth or bristle; the basic chromosome number x= 8 or x= 7, often distributed in Central Asia, Iran, Anatolia, W Europe, N, and NE Africa.
