Type species. Australysmus lacustris Kimmins, 1940: 198 (by original designation).

Diagnosis. Ocelli present; wings elongate, narrow, posterior margin rounded or rarely slightly falcate; FW subcostal veinlets forked along length; FW RP with distal branches slightly sinuous, outer gradate series present; FW MP forked in distal part of wing; HW intramedial area typically not widely separated, crossveins between them basal to MP fork not sinuous and cells quadrate; male genitalia with tergite 9 often posterodorsally projected, gonarcus narrow, densely setose posterolaterally; entoprocessus elongate, subtriangular shaped, projecting posteriorly beyond gonarcus; female genitalia with tergite 8 anteroventrally possessing a hook-like process, tergite 9 anteroventrally projected into a broad lobe; gonapophyses 9 large, forked, modified, often with several lobes.

Comments. A genus endemic to Australia and atypical for the subfamily by lacking the broadly expanded area between MA and MP in the hind wing. The wings are typically elongate, narrow and ovoid (slightly falcate posteriorly in A. neboissi ).
