Description. Measurement. Body length: PEL, male, 3.12–4.10 mm, female, 2.94–4.43 mm. Width: EW, male, 1.54–2.21 mm, female, 1.41–2.35 mm. Biometric data are given in Table 1 View TABLE 1 .

Coloration ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A–O). Body reddish orange. Head usually reddish orange, sometimes black on vertex (fig. 3D–O). Apex of mandible black. Antennae black except first and second segments. Color pattern of pronotum various: without black spot ( Fig. 3A, B View FIGURE 3 ); mostly black ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 H–M, O); or central area with a black spot ( Fig. 3C, D, F View FIGURE 3 ). Scutellum orange or black. Elytra usually reddish orange, but pattern can vary: in many cases, represented by two black-bordered white or yellow spots posteriorly ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 B–E). Meso- and metepisterna black. Metaventrite black except central area. Dorsal surface of fore femora blackened ( Fig. 3B, C View FIGURE 3 , H–N) or fully testaceous (fig. 3A, D, F, G, O). Dorsal surfaces of middle and hind femora black; ventral surfaces of hind femora black except posterior half.

Habitus. Body ovate.

Head ( Fig. 5A View FIGURE 5 ) covered with reticulate coriaceous microsculpture, and sparse setiferous punctures; setae produced from inside punctures ( Fig. 6C View FIGURE 6 ); frontoclypeal suture bisinuate, middle portion wide, about half width of clypeus; labrum and clypeus convex and furnished with setae; length of clypeus longer than that of labrum; apex of clypeus weakly lined. Canthus large, acutely triangular but apex rounded, furnished with a few setae. Apex of mandible bifurcate and furnished with two teeth apically on inner margin; lateral angles furnished with setae ( Fig. 4D View FIGURE 4 ). Antennal insertion marginate. Antenna long; segments short, except for first, third and fourth which are long and slender, eleventh segment pointed; all segments setous, fifth through eleventh segments with shorter, denser setae ( Fig. 4C View FIGURE 4 ).

Pronotum ( Fig. 4A View FIGURE 4 , 5B View FIGURE 5 ) with blunt lateral tubercles, strongly tapered towards base; groove of anterior margin distinctly impressed a narrow distance from margin, but absent on median portion; posterior marginal groove undulate and complete; lateral basal angles weakly swollen, with two to five long setae near base; surface regularly convex, with reticulate coriaceous microsculpture, densely covered with coarse setiferous punctures ( Fig. 6B View FIGURE 6 ); distance between punctures in central portion 1–1.5 times their own diameter, denser laterally. Setae produced from inside punctures ( Fig. 6B View FIGURE 6 ).

Elytra short, leaving apex of pygidium exposed, moderately vaulted in lateral view; lateral sides ovate, widening approaching posterior margin; dorsal surface with reticulate coriaceous microsculpture ( Fig. 6D View FIGURE 6 ), irregularly covered with dense setiferous punctures which are as coarse as on pronotum and separated by 1–3 times their diameter; setae produced just anterior to punctures ( Fig. 6D View FIGURE 6 ); sutural and lateral grooves complete from elytral base to apex; basal areas of elytra weakly convex on either side of suture; humerus strongly protruding anteriorly; epipleu- ron narrow. Scutellum trapezoidal, with setae.

Disc of mesoventrite sparsely furnished with setae and no punctation; process densely furnished with setiferous punctures ( Fig. 5C View FIGURE 5 ). Mesepisternum furnished with a few setiferous punctures ( Fig.5C View FIGURE 5 ). Surface of metaventrite with reticulate coriaceous microsculpture ( Fig. 6A View FIGURE 6 ), and central area covered with setiferous punctures, lateral area more densely covered with setiferous punctures; setae produced from inside punctures ( Fig. 6A View FIGURE 6 ). Surface of sternites with reticulate coriaceous microsculpture, sparsely covered with setiferous punctures. In male, posterior margin of 7th sternite evenly curved ( Fig. 5D View FIGURE 5 ). In female, posterior margin of 7th sternite straight, but bisinuate on central portion ( Fig. 5E View FIGURE 5 ).

Legs densely furnished with setae; tibial setae becoming longer and denser apically. Hind femora thickened. Fore tibiae straight; mid tibiae bowed on apical half; hind tibiae weakly bowed and feebly widened near apex; mid and hind tibiae with a sharply defined and finely crenulate carina along external face. Apex of protibia with one spur; apices of meso- and metatibiae with two spurs. Tarsi distinctly shorter than tibiae, and basal three segments gradually widened apically.

Male genitalia as shown in Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 A–F: 8th sternite furnished with setae, cylindrical, membrane long, allowing for posterior horizontal extension ( Fig. 7E, F View FIGURE 7 ); spiculum fan-shaped ( Fig. 7D View FIGURE 7 ); median struts of median lobe ap- proximately 2.5 times as long as median lobe ( Fig. 7A View FIGURE 7 ); apex of median lobe pointed and inclined to one side ( Fig. 7B View FIGURE 7 ); paramere not developed ( Fig. 7C View FIGURE 7 ).

Spermatheca as shown in Fig. 7G View FIGURE 7 .

Host plant. Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Siebold f. alatus [Japanese name: Nishikigi] ( Chûjô & Kimoto, 1961; Takizawa, 2006); Euonymus sieboldianus Blume [Japanese name: Mayumi] ( Chûjô & Kimoto, 1961; Takizawa, 2006); Euonymus lanceolatus Yatabe [Japanese name: Murasaki-mayumi] ( Suzuki & Matsumura, 2006; Takizawa, 2006); Euonymus oxyphyllus Miq var. oxyphyllus [Japanese name: Tsuribana] ( Kimoto & Takizawa, 1994; Takizawa, 2006); Euonymus melananthus Franch. & Sav. [Japanese name: Sawadatsu] ( Suzuki & Matsumura, 2006; Takizawa, 2006); Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb. var. orbiculatus [Japanese name: Tsuruume-modoki] ( Suzuki & Matsumura, 2006; Takizawa, 2006); Tripterygium regelii Sprague et Takeda [Japanese name: Kuro-zuru] ( Chûjô & Kimoto, 1961; Takizawa, 2006).

Remarks. Zeugophora . annulata is easily distinguished from other Japanese species by the above-mentioned elytral color pattern. Only coloration for Japanese specimens were examined and illustrated in this study though the pattern may vary further in foreign populations ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ).
