30. Cryptocanthon napoensis Cook View in CoL sp.nov.

( Figs. 161–165)

Material Examined. Thirty specimens (16 males, 14 females).

Type Material. Holotype: ‘‘ ECU[ADOR]: Napo, 42009 / 17 km NE Baeza ; 4 km SW Chaco / 3–16.III.76 S. Peck / for. dung trap 16’’ ( CMNC) male . Paratypes (29): same data as holotype ( CMNC) 13 males, 7 females; ( BDGC) 2 females; ‘‘ Ecuador, Napo Prov. / 2,000 m, 7 km S. Baeza / 20–28.II.1979 / H.&A. Howden ’’ ‘‘dung / cup trap ’’ ( CMNC) 2 males, 5 females .

Etymology. The epithet ‘‘napoensis,’’ Latin adjectival form of Napo, refers to the Ecuadorian province where this species was collected.

Diagnosis. This species is distinguished by the following combination of characters: vertical surface of clypeus not foveate; posterior pronotal angles weakly incised; pronotal hypomeron not carinate; inflexed portion of elytron lacking basal fovea; metathoracic wings greatly reduced; male protibia strongly notched near apex ( Fig. 161); parameres truncate at apex ( Fig. 164), lacking fringe of setae.

Description. Holotype. Male. Total length 4.2 mm; greatest width 2.7 mm. Head. Clypeus not strongly produced anteriorly ( Fig. 162). Clypeal teeth moderately well developed, widely separated, moderately reflexed. Clypeal emargination between teeth evenly rounded; vertical surface broadly V-shaped, not foveate. Apical margin of clypeus lateral to teeth convexly arcuate. Disc of clypeus concave, with fine punctures separated by one diameter or more. Clypeogenal suture present. Gena slightly produced anteriorly, forming angle with anterior margin of clypeus. Vertex and gena densely, finely punctate. Pronotum. Convex, explanate anterolaterally, with vague depressions posterolaterally. Anterior angles approximately right-angled. Sides anterior to lateral angles nearly straight; weakly sinuate posterior to lateral angles. Posterior angles obtuse, weakly incised. Pronotum finely punctate medially; laterally, punctures large, shallow, annulate; setae fine, pale, conspicuous. Pronotal hypomeron convex, shallowly punctate, not carinate posteriorly. Elytra. Transversely and longitudinally strongly convex; lateral carinae not elevated. Each elytron dorsally with seven striae, each stria indicated by two wavy lines. Elytral intervals slightly convex; each interval with row of closely spaced, minute, setose punctures on each side adjacent to striae; setae conspicuous, erect, curved at apices. Inflexed portion of elytron broad, evenly narrowed apically, with minute, scattered punctures; basal fovea absent; striae eight and nine absent, stria ten indicated by row of coarse punctures adjacent to epipleuron. Epipleuron with scattered small punctures. Wings. Metathoracic wings greatly reduced. Venter. Prosternum with medium-sized, shallow punctures. Mesosternum with small punctures medially; laterally, with large, shallow, annulate punctures. Meso-metasternal suture slightly angulate medially. Metasternum slightly convex medially, with minute punctures anteriorly; posteriorly, punctures larger, shallow, annulate; laterally, punctures dense, large, shallow, annulate. Legs. Profemur densely punctate ventrally. Protibia ( Fig. 161) widened medially in apical half; distinctly notched apically before apex. Mesofemur and metafemur with very fine scattered punctures ventrally. Metatrochanter unmodified. Metatibia angulate, weakly crenulate; with minute subapical lobe on inner side.

Abdomen. Apical sternite with shallow, annulate punctures. Pygidium moderately convex with median longitudinal swelling; base with small median depression. Male genitalia. Parameres ( Figs. 163–164) truncate at apex; apices not setose.

Variation. Male: total length 3.5–4.2 mm; greatest width 2.3–2.7 mm. Female: total length 3.2–4.2 mm; greatest width 2.1–2.7 mm; clypeal teeth more strongly developed; protibia unmodified; metatibia slightly angulate.

Bionomics. This species has been collected in forest dung traps at 1,300–2,000 m elevation. It has been taken during the months of February and March.

Geographic Distribution ( Fig. 165). This species occurs on the eastern slope of the Andean Cordillera in the province of Napo, Ecuador.
