22. Cryptocanthon chiriquinus Howden and Gill View in CoL

( Figs. 120–124 View Figs )

Cryptocanthon chiriquinus Howden and Gill 1987:207 View in CoL

Material Examined. Two specimens (1 male, 1 female).

Type Material Examined. Holotype: ‘‘ PANAMA: Chiriqui / La Fortuna Dam / 14–20.VI.1982 / B. Gill, 1,200 m ’’ ( CMNC) male . Allotype: same data as holotype, ‘‘trap: minidung’’ ( BDGC) female .

Diagnosis. This species is distinguished by the following combination of characters: vertical surface of clypeus not foveate; pronotal hypomeron not carinate; inflexed portion of elytron lacking basal fovea; metathoracic wings greatly reduced; pygidium evenly convex, not carinate; apical abdominal sternite with median lobe on posterior margin; paramere apices broad, angulate-truncate ( Fig. 123 View Figs ).

Description. Male. Total length 3.3 mm; greatest width 2.1 mm. Head. Clypeus not strongly produced anteriorly ( Fig. 121 View Figs ). Clypeal teeth moderately well developed, widely separated, moderately reflexed. Clypeal emargination evenly rounded; vertical surface shallowly V-shaped, not foveate. Apical margin of clypeus lateral to teeth nearly straight. Disc of clypeus weakly concave anteriorly, coarsely, densely punctate, punctures separated by one diameter or less; punctures smaller anteriorly. Clypeogenal suture indicated by raised carina. Gena not produced anteriorly. Vertex and gena coarsely, densely punctate. Pronotum. Convex medially, laterally explanate, shallowly depressed laterally in posterior half. Anterior angles acute. Sides anterior to lateral angles slightly concavely arcuate; straight posterior to lateral angles. Posterior angles obtusely angulate, not incised. Pronotum densely punctate; punctures of disc elongate, curved; laterally and along posterior margin, punctures large, round, annulate; setae pale, inconspicuous. Pronotal hypomeron convex, coarsely punctate, not carinate posteriorly. Elytra. Transversely and longitudinally strongly convex; lateral carinae not strongly elevated. Each elytron dorsally with seven striae, each stria indicated by two feebly wavy lines. Elytral intervals flat; each interval with widely spaced very fine setose punctures on each side adjacent to striae; setae fine, short, inconspicuous. Inflexed portion of elytron moderately broad, evenly narrowed apically, lacking basal fovea, transverse wrinkles near base, nearly impunctate; stria eight and nine absent, ten complete. Epipleuron impunctate. Wings. Metathoracic wings greatly reduced. Venter. Prosternum densely punctate. Mesosternum with scattered small punctures medially; shallow, annulate punctures laterally. Meso-metasternal suture rounded medially. Metasternum flat medially with minute, scattered, finely setose punctures; punctures larger posteriorly; laterally, punctures large, dense, annulate. Legs. Profemur densely punctate ventrally. Protibia broadened medially in apical two-thirds, notched medially before apex ( Fig. 120 View Figs ). Mesofemur and metafemur with elongate punctures ventrally. Metatrochanter unmodified. Metatibia evenly curved, not crenulate; with small subapical tooth. Abdomen Apical sternite evenly convex, densely punctate, with rounded median lobe on posterior margin. Pygidium evenly convex, truncate apically, moderately punctate; base not sulcate. Male genitalia. Parameres ( Figs. 122–123 View Figs ) with apices broad, slightly angulate-truncate; not setose.

Variation. Female. Total length 3.67 mm; greatest width 2.15 mm. Clypeal teeth more strongly developed. Legs unmodified.

Bionomics. The two known specimens of this species were taken in dung traps during June at 1,200 m.

Geographic Distribution ( Fig. 124). This species is known only from the type locality in Chiriqui Province, Panama .
