Cryptocanthon newtoni Howden 1976:98 View in CoL

Material Examined. Twenty-three specimens (14 males, 9 females)

Type Material Examined. Holotype: ‘‘ MEX [ICO]: Chiapas / 8 mi. N. Pueblo / Nuevo. 26–27.VIII / 1973. 60009 cld.for. / A. Newton. #5410 ( CMNC) male . Allotype: same data as holotype ( CMNC) female . Paratypes (7): same data as holotype ( CMNC) 5 males, 1 female, ( BDGC) 1 female.

Non-type Material Examined. ‘‘ MEX [ICO]: Chiapas, 8.9 km E. Rayon, 1,500 m, 19.IX.1991, R. Anderson, cloud forest litter, 91–109’’ ( CMNC) 7 males, 6 females ; ‘‘ Chiapas, Yerba-buena Preserve, 2 km NW Pueblo Nuevo, Solistahuacan , 2,100 m, 23.IX.1992, 92–114, R.S. Anderson, cloud for. litter’’ ( CMNC) 1 male .

Diagnosis. This species is distinguished by the following combination of characters: clypeal teeth poorly developed in male ( Fig. 90 View Figs ); vertical surface of clypeus foveate; pronotum strongly convex medially; pronotal hypomeron carinate; inflexed portion of elytron with basal fovea; metathoracic wings greatly reduced; pygidium with small median convexity, not longitudinally carinate; paramere apices weakly lobed ( Fig. 92 View Figs ).

Description. Male. Total length 3.6–4.1 mm; greatest width 1.9–2.3 mm. Head. Clypeus moderately produced anteriorly ( Fig. 90 View Figs ). Clypeal teeth poorly developed. Clypeus shallowly emarginate between teeth; vertical surface broadly U-shaped with a large, deep, round fovea. Apical margin of clypeus lateral to teeth convexly arcuate. Disc of clypeus with posteromedian convexity; punctation scattered, shallow. Clypeogenal suture not evident. Gena slightly produced, forming angle at junction with anterior margin of clypeus. Vertex and gena with irregularly spaced, shallow, annulate punctures. Pronotum. Strongly convex medially, with longitudinal posteromedian depression; laterally explanate, shallowly depressed posterolaterally. Anterior angles approximately right-angled. Sides anterior to lateral angles straight; slightly convexly arcuate posterior to lateral angles. Posterior angles broadly rounded, not incised. Pronotum with irregularly-spaced, shallow, annulate punctures; posteromedian depression impunctate; punctures bearing conspicuous arched, pale setae. Pronotal hypomeron convex, coarsely, densely punctate; longitudinal carina present posterolaterally. Elytra. Transversely moderately convex, longitudinally strongly convex; lateral carinae moderately strongly elevated. Each elytron dorsally with seven striae, each stria vaguely indicated by two wavy lines. Elytral intervals nearly flat; each interval with row of setose punctures on each side adjacent to striae; setae conspicuous, erect, with curved apices; setal rows on outer side of intervals one, three, and five distinct, setae dense. Inflexed portion of elytron broad, sharply narrowed in apical fifth, with small, scattered setose punctures; basal fovea present; striae eight and nine absent, ten complete adjacent to sharply raised margin of epipleuron. Epipleuron with irregular transverse ridges. Wings. Metathoracic wings reduced to elongate knobs. Venter. Prosternum with medium-sized, shallow, annulate punctures. Mesosternum densely covered with large, shallow, annulate punctures. Meso-metasternal suture broadly rounded medially. Metasternum concave medially with minute, scattered punctures anteriorly, medium-sized setose punctures posteriorly; laterally, punctures large, shallow, annulate. Legs. Profemur ventrally with medium-sized punctures. Protibia ( Fig. 89 View Figs ) not broadened medially, not notched, strongly lobed on medial side at apex. Mesofemur finely punctate ventrally. Metafemur with elongate punctures ventrally. Metatrochanter unmodified. Metatibia moderately strongly angulate, finely crenulate on inner margin, lobed apically on inner side. Abdomen. Apical sternite with mediumsized, shallow punctures. Pygidium with small, steep convexity medially in basal half; with medium-sized, shallow punctures; with short, broad sulcus at base. Male genitalia. Parameres ( Figs. 91–92 View Figs ) with apices narrowly rounded, not setose.

Variation. Female. Total length 3.6–3.9 mm; greatest width 1.9–2.1 mm. Clypeal teeth well developed, strongly reflexed. Tibiae unmodified. In some individuals of both sexes protarsi and protibial teeth completely eroded.

Bionomics. This species has been collected in dung traps and in cloud forest litter at 1,500 –2,100 m during the months of August and September.

Geographic Distribution ( Fig. 93). This species occurs in the Mexican state of Chiapas.
