17. Cryptocanthon ocosingo Cook View in CoL sp.nov.
( Figs. 94–98 View Figs )
Material Examined. Six specimens (3 males, 3 females).
Type Material. Holotype: ‘‘ MEXICO: Chiapas, 12.5 km / N.W. Ocosingo, 1,400 m, 16.IX. / 1992, R.S. Anderson, 92-106 / oak/pine forest’’ ( CMNC) male . Paratypes (5): same data as holotype ( CMNC) 1 male, 2 females ; ‘‘ Chiapas, 6 km / S.W. Ocosingo, 1,400 m / 22.IX.1991, R. Anderson / wet oak/pine for. litt., 91-116’’ ( CMNC) 1 male, 1 female .
Etymology. The epithet ‘‘ocosingo,’’ a noun in apposition, refers to the type locality of this species near Ocosingo, Chiapas.
Diagnosis. This species is distinguished by the following combination of characters: vertical surface of clypeus not foveate; pronotal hypomeron carinate; inflexed portion of elytron with basal fovea; metathoracic wings greatly reduced; male protibia trilobed on inner margin ( Fig. 94 View Figs ); pygidium with strong median convexity; paramere apices angulate-truncate ( Figs. 96–97 View Figs ).
Description. Holotype. Male. Total length 4.5 mm; greatest width 2.6 mm.
Head. Clypeus not strongly produced anteriorly ( Fig. 95 View Figs ). Clypeal teeth moderately developed, widely separated, moderately reflexed. Clypeal emargination evenly rounded; vertical surface broadly V-shaped, not foveate. Apical margin of clypeus lateral to teeth nearly straight. Disc of clypeus concave, with medium-sized punctures separated by less than one diameter. Clypeogenal suture vaguely carinate. Gena not produced, with slight angle at junction with anterior margin of clypeus. Vertex and gena with medium-sized, dense punctures. Pronotum. Convex medially, laterally explanate, shallow depressions laterally in posterior half; with shallow median longitudinal depression in posterior half. Anterior angles approximately right-angled. Sides anterior to lateral angles nearly straight, very slightly rounded posterior to lateral angles. Posterior angles obtusely rounded, not incised. Pronotum densely punctate; punctures of disc small anteriorly; posteriorly and laterally, punctures large, shallow, annulate; setae pale, arched, conspicuous. Pronotal hypomeron convex, coarsely punctate, with posterolateral longitudinal carina curving toward posterior angles. Elytra. Transversely and longitudinally moderately convex; lateral carinae not strongly elevated. Each elytron dorsally with seven striae, first six indicated by two feeble wavy lines, seventh vaguely indicated along edge of dorsal carina. Elytral intervals convex; each interval with row of closely spaced very fine setose punctures on each side adjacent to striae; setae short, pale, strongly arched. Inflexed portion of elytron moderately broad, slightly sinuate apically, with scattered, fine setose punctures and transverse wrinkles; basal fovea present; striae eight and nine absent, ten complete along margin of epipleuron. Epipleuron with scattered fine, setose punctures. Wings. Metathoracic wings greatly reduced. Venter. Prosternum with medium-sized shallow, annulate punctures. Mesosternum with shallow, annulate punctures; punctures medium-sized medially, large laterally. Meso-metasternal suture rounded medially. Metasternum concave medially; disc with minute punctures in anterior third, medium-sized punctures posteriorly; laterally, punctures large, dense, annulate. Legs. Profemur strongly punctate ventrally. Protibia ( Fig. 94 View Figs ) with bilobed medial expansion in apical half before notch, distal lobe more strongly developed; subapical notch small but distinct. Mesofemur and metafemur with small, elongate punctures ventrally. Metatrochanter unmodified. Metatibia slightly angulate, not crenulate; with small subapical lobe on inner margin. Abdomen. Apical sternite with irregularly spaced, medium-sized, shallow punctures. Pygidium with strong median convexity, steeply declivous basally; with irregularly spaced, medium-sized, shallow punctures; base with median fovea. Male genitalia. Parameres ( Figs. 96–97 View Figs ) with apices angulatetruncate, not setose.
Variation. Male: total length 3.8–4.5 mm; greatest width 2.0– 2.6 mm. Female: total length 3.9 mm; greatest width 2.1–2.2 mm; clypeal teeth more strongly developed; tibiae unmodified; metasternum slightly convex.
Bionomics. This species has been collected from oak/pine forest litter, at 1,400 m elevation, during the month of September.
Geographic Distribution ( Fig. 98). This species occurs in the region of Ocosingo in the Mexican state of Chiapas.
