A widespread and very variable Holarctic species. Specimens which we have seen from Mongolia, which were recorded erroneously as E. aggregata Guenée View in CoL , E. fuscicostata Christoph ( Vojnits, 1975) View in CoL , E. rivosulata Dietze ( Viidalepp & Soljanikov, 1977) View in CoL and E. mongolica Vojnits View in CoL , are coloured light grey with distinct transverse lines on the wings. The male genitalia of this species are also variable, especially the cornuti on the vesica of aedeagus, as well as the shape of the eighth sternite in the male. Mongolia (aimags): Arkhangai, Tuv, Zavkhan.
