(10) Latonopsis australis Sars, 1888 View in CoL s.lat.
Indian records. Andaman & Nicobar Islands — Venkataraman (1991b, 2000a); Goa— Rane (2008); Karnataka — Raghunathan & Rane (2001), Rajshekhar et al. (2009); Kerala — Subhash Babu & Thomas (2007); Maharashtra —Michael & Sharma B.K. (1988), Rane (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006), Padhye & Kotov (2010); Rajasthan — Biswas (1971); Michael & Sharma B.K. (1988), Venkataraman (1992b); Tamil Nadu — Venkataraman (1993a, 1995a, 1999b); Michael & Sharma B.K. (1988), Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2002, 2009); Tripura — Venkataraman (1995b), Venkataraman & Das (2000); West Bengal — Venkataraman (1993a, 1998c), Venkataraman & Nandi (1997), Venkataraman et al. (2000), Venkataraman & Das (2001), Khan (2003); “numerous Indian records to Kashmir in the North” ( Korovchinsky, 2004); General record— Fernando & Kanduru (1984), Sharma B.K. & Michael (1987), Murugan et al. (1998), Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).
Remarks. L. australis s.str. is a valid species described from Australia ( Sars 1888). This is apparently a group of cryptic species ( Korovchinsky 2004).
Distribution. Tropics and subtropics of western and eastern hemisphere ( Korovchinsky 2004).
Latonopsis fasciculata Daday, 1905
Indian records. Jammu & Kashmir— Nath (1994), Dar et al. (2002); General record— Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).
Remarks. Latonopsis fasciculata Daday, 1905 was described from Paraguay ( Daday 1905). Korovchinsky (1985) placed this taxon to the genus Sarsilatona and synonymised with S. serricaudata ( Sars 1901) , another Neotropical taxon. Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003) in their checklist represented “ Latonopsis fasciculate Rane and Harshey ”, which is an apparent confusion. No ideas what the authors meant.
Latonopsis fernandoi Rane, 1983 —see Sarsilatona fernandoi .
Latonopsis occidentalis Birge, 1892
Indian records. Jammu & Kashmir— Dar et al. (2002); Kerala — Balaraman (2008); Rajasthan — Biswas (1971); General record— Fernando & Kanduru (1984).
Remarks. L occidentalis was described from USA ( Birge 1892). It is a member of the L. autralis -group, Harding and Petkovski (1963) synonymised this taxon with L. australis . The group of L. australis s. lat. needs to be revised ( Korovchinsky 2004). Even in the case of acceptance (in the future) of the American L. occidentalis as a valid taxon, its presence in India is highly doubtful.
