(2) Diaphanosoma celebensis Stingelin, 1900 View in CoL
Indian records. Tamil Nadu, South India — Korovchinsky (1993); South-west coast of India ( Korovchinsky 2004); Goa— Shrivastava et al. (1999), Prabhukonar & Achuthankutty (2004).
Remarks. Valid species described from Indonesia ( Stingelin 1900). Kanduru (1981) reported a species from South India under the name Diaphanosoma aspinosum . According to Korovchinsky (1993), these populations also belong to Diaphanosoma celebensis . D. celebensis is also reported from Mandovi Estuary, Goa— Shrivastava et al. (1999). ”It is most likely that earlier reports (Menon et al. 1971; Madhupratap & Haridas 1975; Madhupratap 1981; Haridas et al. 1980) on the occurrence of Penilia avirostris (a high saline species) in the estuarine and coastal waters of the west coast of India during low saline periods may be due to mistaken identication of the species, as P. avirostris morphologically closely resembles D. celebensis . Therefore, it appears that D. celebensis has a wider distribution in Indian waters during the low saline period” ( Srivastava et al. 1999). Biology of this species was studied by Shrivastava et al. (1999), Achuthankutty et al. (2000) and Pravakonkar & Achuthankutty (2004).
Distribution. Tropics of Asia from Sulawesi to India ( Korovchinsky 2004).
Diaphanosoma chandramohani Rao, Padmaja & Naidu, 1998
Type locality. " Vizinanagaran district ", Andhra Pradesh, India ( Rao et al. 1998b) .
Indian records. Andhra Pradesh — Rao et al. (1998b).
Remarks. Doubtful species, inadequately depicted and described. The species had been named without comparison to others or giving any explanation or arguments why this has been declared a new species. Incerta sedis according to Korovchinsky (2004).
