(137) Leptodora kindti ( Focke, 1844) View in CoL

Indian records. Jammu & Kashmir—Michael & Sharma B.K. (1988), Nath (1994), West Bengal — Mandal (1980); General Record— Fernando & Kanduru (1984); Sharma B.K. & Michael (1987), Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).

Remarks. Valid species described from Germany ( Focke 1844) and redescribed by Korovchinsky and Boikova (2008). It was found recently that there are two cryptic species in the Palaearctic, with L. kindti predominantly in the West and L. richardi in the East ( Korovchinsky 2009; Xu L. et al. 2010). Apparently Oriental populations need to be carefuly examined to resolve species status—in India L. kindti , L. richardi , or even yet another taxon is possible, as the only records are from high altitude (Kashmir).

Distribution. Holarctic with rare populations in other zones, which need to be revised.

Leptodora hyalina Lilljeborg, 1861

Indian records. Jammu & Kashmir— Brehm (1936).

Remarks. It was described from Scandinavia ( Lilljeborg 1861). Junior synonym of L. kindti ( Focke 1844) .

Addional lapsi

Below are additional erroneous records, that are not included in our checklist, and provided of brief few comments. In the absence of illustrations or descriptions, it is often impossible to understand which taxa are meant by authors. Alona exigma in Ahangar et al. (2012). It is unclear which taxon the authors meant. May be, this is Alona eximia , which apparently could be expected in India ( Nicsmirnovius eximius ), or even Alonella exigua ?

Alona quadrata in Shukla et al. (2002). This is an obvious misspelling and invalid name, perhaps the authors meant A. quadrangularis or a related species.

Ceriodaphnia macrura in Shinde et al. (2012). We have no idea what the authors meant. No taxon with such a name exists, except Daphnia macrura Dana 1852 , for which we even do not know its real generic status, or perhaps this is a basic confusion with Moina micrura .

Cerioda pheriereticulata in Prabhakar et al. (2012) is probably Ceriodaphnia reticulata .

Chyderinae sp. from Tamil Nadu in Prabhakar et al. (2012) is probably Chydorinae gen.sp.

Chydorus cornuta in Sharma V. et al. (2012). Possibly, authors meant Ceriodaphnia cornuta .

Chydorus quadrangular in Sharma V. et al. (2012). Possibly confusion with Alona quadrangularis .

Chydorus laticaudata in Sharma V. et al. (2012). Possibly confused with Ceriodaphnia laticaudata .

Chydorus macrodonta in Fernando & Kanduru (1984). An apparent misspelling, no such taxon was described during the whole period of cladoceran studies. Perhaps a confusion with the name Leydigia macrodonta .

Chydornus sp in Prabhakar et al. (2012) is probably Chydorus sp.

Daphnia caritiata in Koli & Muley (2012). No taxon with such name exists. Probably this is a misspelling of Daphnia carinata .

Daphnia scholderi in Akthar (1972). Most probably, this is D. schoedleri Sars, 1862 , which is a dubious record for India.

Macrothrix rectirostris in Brehm (1936), Fernando & Kanduru (1984), Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003). This "taxon" most probably appeared as a result of a mistake by Brehm (1936) who meant another species ( Moina rectirostris ? Lathonura rectirostris ?).

Macrothrix toiserids in Sinha & Khan (2000). No ideas what taxon the authors meant, perhaps spelling error of triserialis ?

Moina daphnia in Bilgrami (1991a), Kiran et al. (2007) and Rajagopal et al. (2010) is an apparent misunderstanding of the generic names in the Moinidae . The authors, most probably, meant ” Moinodaphnia ”.

Moina rosea in Sharma R. et al. (2011). No taxon with such name exists. Possibly, the authors meant Macrothrix rosea .

Oxyurella tenuicornis in Fernando & Kanduru (1984). A misspelling by Fernando & Kanduru (1984), likely O. tenuicaudis .
