( Figs 72–73 View FIGURES 67 – 73 & 86 View FIGURES 84 – 92 )
Pipunculus wolfi Kowarz, 1887: 152 (as wolfii)
Material: Czech Republic, Mariánské Lázne (“Marienbad”): 1ɗ (paralectotype) 1Ψ (lectotype), 8.VI.1869, Kowarz ( UMO); Germany, Saxony, Oberlausitz, Jonsdorf bei Zittau, Autokäscher: 1Ψ, 23.VI.2005, Sieber ( SMNG).
Male with head glued to thorax in the past and entire abdomen missing. Body length: app. 5.0mm. Wing length: 5.4mm. Flagellum dark brown. Frons brown pollinose. Eyes meeting for slightly more than length of frons (18 facets). Occiput grey pollinose in lower and brown pollinose in upper half. Postpronotal lobe presumably dark brown. Prescutum not visible. Scutum entirely brown pollinose. Pleura with anepimeron, katepimeron, posterior margin of anepisternum and upper margin of katepisternum light brown pollinose, otherwise weakly grey pollinose. Scutellum with apical fringe of about 12 evenly spaced hairs. Subscutellum brownish pollinose (as Fig. 78 View FIGURES 74 – 83 ). LTC about 2.0 times LFC. Trochanter yellowish. Femur with base (optionally) and apex narrowly yellow. Hind femur ventrally considerably concave in basal half ( Fig. 86 View FIGURES 84 – 92 ). Tibia yellowish, ventrally darkened in apical two thirds. Hind tibia considerably bent ( Fig. 86 View FIGURES 84 – 92 ). Tarsi brownish, with distitarsi darkest. Pulvilli of front leg slightly shorter than distitarsi. Abdomen and genitalia missing.
Female: Body length: 4.8–5.0mm. Wing length: 5.4–5.5mm. Flagellum mid brown. Frons entirely grey pollinose, in upper half only weakly. Postpronotal lobe mid brown. Prescutum and scutum grey pollinose in anterior quarter, laterally down to wing base, otherwise brown pollinose. Pleura and subscutellum grey pollinose. LTC about 1.2–1.4 times LFC. Trochanter yellowish. Femur with base and apex narrowly yellow. Tibia yellow, darkened ventromedially. Tarsi yellowish with distitarsi darkened. Pulvilli of front legs almost double length of distitarsi. Tergites 1–6 laterally grey pollinose. Dorsally, tergite 1 brown in anterior and grey pollinose in posterior half. Tergite 2 either grey or greyish-brown pollinose on almost entire surface. Tergite 3 with anterior third to half (more towards the middle), tergite 4 (and tergite 5) narrowly along anterior margin with grey or brown pollinosity, otherwise shining as is tergite 6 (and tergite 5). Ovipositor in lateral view with rather short, straight piercer, its dorsal surface is at the same hight than its base ( Fig. 72 View FIGURES 67 – 73 ). Transition from base to piercer without ventral step.
Annotations: Pipunculus wolfi was originally described from a male and female taken in copula and thereafter synonymized with P. campestris by Strobl (1894: 8). Both type specimens, placed on one pin, could be studied except the entire abdomen of the male that is missing. Although the identity of the male could not be established, the female exhibits a uniquely shaped ovipositor. Consequently, the species is resurrected from synonymy (stat. rev.) and the female designated as lectotype. The female described and figured in Földvári & Kozánek (2001) as P. omissinervis is considered conspecific with P. w o l f i. Similarly, the female of P. thomsoni figured in Morakote & Hirashima (1990) and cited for Japan is P. w o l f i. There is no evidence that the accompanying male of P. thomsoni sensu Morakote & Hirashima (1990) can be considered P. w o l f i, as no males have been collected together with females.
