TYPE LOCALITY: Indonesia, W. Sumatra, Bengkeulen .
DISTRIBUTION: Barisan Mountains of Sumatra; mountains of Malay Peninsula S. of Perak River.
COMMENT: Type species of Symphalangus ; see Groves, 1972, in Rumbaugh, ed., Gibbon and Siamang, 1: 1-89. CAH considers Symphalangus a distinct genus.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix 1 as Hylobates spp. and U.S. ESA - Endangered as Hylobates spp. (including Nomascus spp. ). CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered as Symphalangus syndactylus .
