TYPE LOCALITY: Africa .
DISTRIBUTION: S.E. Nigeria; Cameroun, north of the Sanaga River and just south of it; Bioko.
COMMENT: Delson and Napier, 1976, Bull. Zool. Nomenci., 33:46, considered this species in the subgenus Papio . Placed in subgenus Mandrillus by Dandelot, 1974, Part 3: 9. See Grubb, 1973, Folia Primatol., 20: 161-177, for details of distribution.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I as P. (= Mandrillus ) leucophaeus and U.S. ESA- Endangered as P. leucophaeus .
