COMMENT: Revised by Petter et al., 1977, Faune de Madagascar, 44:274-318. Six of the seven species are known to be karyotypically distinct (CPG). CAH follows Rumpier, 1975:25-40, and Corbet and Hill, 1980:83, in placing this genus in a subfamily of Lemuridae ; Petter and Petter, 1977, Part 3.1:6, placed it in its own family Lepilemuridae .

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I as Lepilemur spp. and U.S. ESA - Endangered as Lemuridae and Lepilemur spp.
