Genus Moolgarda Whitley, 1945 View in CoL View at ENA
Remarks. Whitley (1945) described the genus Moolgarda . Generic characters described by Whitley such as presence of large pectoral axillary scale, adipose eye fold covering one third of the eye, toothless jaws, terminal upper jaw, moderately thick upper lip and origin of second dorsal and anal fin opposite to each other correlates with Valamugil Smith 1948 . He also compared description of Mugil capito Cuvier , described by Günter’s (1861) as a genotype of Liza , and referred to the hidden maxilla in his fish which is also a distinguishing character of Valamugil . Thomson (1997) and Ghasemzadeh (1997) did not accept the Genus Moolgarda and accepted genus Valamugil Smith, 1948 . Senou (2002) recognized the genus Moolgarda and described Valamugil as a junior synonym of it. Durand et al. (2012) on the basis of molecular studies proposed that Valamugil and Moolgarda are polyphyletic. Eschmeyer and Fong (2015) assigned Moolgarda as a valid genus.
