Diagnosis. Robust body, deep caudal peduncle. Head flat and broad. Terminal mouth. Lips thin and without any fleshy lamellae on lower jaw. Adipose eye fold absent. Maxilla curved downwards and visible postero-ventrally when mouth closed. Nostrils nearer to each other than to eye or lip. Scales are weakly ctenoid and fewer than 28 in lateral series. Pectoral axillary scale absent. Pectoral fin blackish with yellow margin. Anal fin contains 3 spines and 8 soft rays. Truncated caudal fin. Yellowish iris. Body dorsally olive brown, flanks silvery, pale yellowish abdomen, fins dusky. About 6 dark stripes on lateral series longitudinally. Ellochelon is monotypic Genus and is represented by Ellochelon vaigiensis .
Remarks. Ellochelon Whitley (1930) can be distinguished from Planiliz a by its truncate caudal fin, broad head, fewer number of longitudinal scales, distinct stripes on lateral scales and darker fins. Some authors like Schultz (1953), Munro (1956), Thomson (1954 & 1997), Pillay (1962), Masuda et al (1984) recognized it as Liza whereas, Fowler (1944), Smith (1948), Randall (1955 & 1959), Ghasemzadeh (1998), Durand (2012), Eschmeyer and Fong (2015) recognized Ellochelon as distinct and valid Genus.
