Antennablennius (subgenus of Blennius ) Fowler, 1931: 245 (type species Blennius hypenetes Klunzinger, 1871 ; type by original designation).

Generic description. Blennies of the genus Antennablennius are diagnosed by a set of the following characters: dorsal-fin rays XII–XIII,15–21 (usually XII,16–20), dorsal fin weakly to moderately notched between spinous and soft portions; anal-fin rays II,16–23 (rarely 16 or 23); pectoral-fin rays 13–15 (usually 14); pelvic-fin rays I,3, spine embedded, barely visible externally; segmented caudal-fin rays 13, the middle seven to nine branched. Lateral line tubular, continuous, with simple pores, restricted to body dorsoanteriorly, ending below dorsal-fin spine II-VIII. Fleshy crest on head present or absent; anterior nostril tubular, with a slender cirrus on the posterior rim which varies in length from short to very long; posterior nostril without cirrus; supraorbital tentacle absent; cirri on nape present, varying from very short to very long; median supratemporal pores present; margins of lips smooth; teeth incisiform, close-set, immovable, 26–45 teeth in upper jaw, 21–36 teeth in lower jaw; a very small canine tooth posteriorly in lower jaw, usually smaller in females, separated from incisiform teeth by a toothless gap; no teeth on vomer; gill opening continuous across isthmus. Last ray of dorsal and anal fins attached by membrane to caudal peduncle. Seven selected morphological characters to distinguish eight species of the genus are provided in Table 3 .
