Gastrana fragilis var. rarilamellosa Bellini, 1903a: 27
Type locality: not specified [inferred as presumably described from Phlaegrean lagoons ( Fusaro Lake , Lucrino Lake , and Miseno Lake , Bacoli / Pozzuoli area, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy)] .
Original description: “strie più larghe e più distanti; forma dipendente dal polimorfismo di questa specie” [shell with wider and more distant striae—with respect to Gastrana fragilis ( Linnaeus, 1758) , reported as Gastrana fragilis L. —; a form depending from the polymorphism of this species].
Remarks: having been instituted on the basis of insignificant morphological characteristics, we rank it infrasubspecific, and thus not available ( ICZN 2012: Art. 10.2, 45 .5, 45.6, glossary). This seems to be an overlooked taxon, never reported after its original description apart by Bellini (1929a) in his general overview of the marine molluscan species living in the Gulf of Naples. Taking into account the absence of congeneric and/or similar species from the Gulf of Naples and generally the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the fact that this species is commonly encountered in the Phlaegrean lagoons (authors’ unpublished data), we are prone to consider that it was truly described as based on Gastrana fragilis ( Linnaeus, 1758) .
