Type data. The specimen designated holotype is a male collected in La Tirana, northern Chile, by the Chilean ichthyologist Eduardo De la Hoz Urrejola (1941‒1997), who was member of the Department of Zoology of the PUCV and former student of Haroldo Toro. The holotype was originally housed at PUCV , but is currently in the AMNH. It bears the following data label: TARAPACA TIRANA 15- IX-84 [printed]\ DE LA HOZ COL. CHILE [printed]\ [red label] HOLOTIPO [printed]\ Centris mixta tamarugalis n. subsp. [printed]\ AMNH _ IZC 00324673 About AMNH QR code [printed] ( AMNH). Type locality. Chile: Tarapacá Region: La Tirana .
In 1970, DE LA HOZ published an article on the intraspecific variation of the male genitalia in three species of Centris using some specimens identified as C. mixta Friese, 1904 collected during the expeditions of the PUCV to northern Chile. Centris mixta tamarugalis was described 29 years after De la Hoz’s paper and at that time the subspecies was not considered different from C. mixta . This means that the research conducted by him was actually based on specimens of C. tamarugalis and not of the former species ( VIVALLO et al., 2003).
