Distribution. Widely distributed in the world oceans in tropical and temperate areas. Atlantic, Indo-Pacific, Antarctica, Philippines. Northwestern Mediterranean Sea.
Depth range. 100–6500 m.
Habitat. Bathypelagic as adult, young specimens live in considerably higher levels than adults.
Iberian Seas published records. SE Bay of Biscay continental slope ( Fage 1942, De Jong & Casanova 1997b, Lagardère & Nouvel 1980, Lagardère 1983, 1985, Petryashov 2014). Southern margin of the Cap-Ferret trench ( Elizalde et al. 1991, 1993, Elizalde 1994, Sorbe & Weber 1995). Cap Breton canyon ( Frutos & Sorbe 2014). Off the Asturian Central Coast ( Nouvel 1943, Anadon 1993). Le Danois Bank (Sánchez et al. 2008). Off Finisterre ( Illig 1930, Fage 1942). Off Calician and Asturian coasts ( Lagardère 1983) . Azores /Biscay rise close to the margin of the Iberian-Abyssal Plain (42ºN, 17ºW: Angel et al. 1982, Hargreaves 1985). Off Lisboa ( Nouvel 1943). Gibraltar ( Nouvel 1942). Gulf of Cádiz and Alboran Sea ( Nouvel 1943) . Catalan Sea ( Nouvel 1943, Stefanescu & Cartes 1992, Cartes & Sorbe 1995, Cartes 1998, 1993, Cartes et al. 2013). SW Balearic Islands ( Dion & Nouvel 1960, Cartes et al. 2003, 2008). Off Barcelona, Menorca and Mallorca ( Nouvel 1943). Banyuls-sur-mer ( Denis 1929). Offshore species related to the Canary Archipelago ( Wittmann & Wirtz 1998, Wittmann et al. 2004) . South Canary Islands- Cape Bojador ( Illig 1930, Fage 1942) . Madeira ( Illig 1930) . Remarks. According to Tattersall & Tattersall (1951), Wittmann & Ariani (2010) and Wittmann & Riera (2012), Eucopia hanseni Nouvel, 1942 , is considered synonymous with Eucopia unguiculata (several Iberian records of this specie are reported as E. hanseni ).
