Type host: Poecilia reticulata Peters (“guppy”).
Site of infection: Skin and fins.
Type locality: Not known.
Type material examined: Four voucher specimens from Poecilia reticulata kept in Dr. Andrew P. Shinn’s gyrodactylid collection were studied for light microscopy.
Comments: Type locality not known as parasites were collected from aquarium fish imported into Britain from Singapore. Harris (1986) discussed the fact that the origin of G. turnbulli is uncertain as its poeciliid host has been extensively dispersed by humans.
The marginal hooks of G. turnbulli most closely resemble those of G. gambusiae , G. m i l l e r i and G. pictae . Of these, G. milleri is unique in its possession of three, morphologically different marginal hooks whilst the sickles of G. gambusiae and G. pictae , proportionately are more robust than the comparatively slender G. turnbulli . The morphology of the G. turnbulli sickles, notably their shorter and slender sickle bases, permits its ready discrimination from both G. j a ro c h o sp. nov. and G. xalapensis sp. nov.
