Brundiniella galbina (Wang, Cheng et Wang) comb. nov.

( Figure 4 View FIGURE 4 )

Macropelopia galbina Wang, Cheng et Wang, 2011: 4122 .

Material examined. Holotype of Macropelopia galbina : M ( BNKU), labelled “BDN No. 09874”, CHINA: Yunnan Prov., Dali Pref., Eryuan City, Meici River , 16.v.1995, B.X. Wang & L.F. Yang.

Redescription. Male (n = 1). Total length 4.3 mm.

Coloration. Body predominantly yellow; thorax slightly darkened on scutal vittae, anepisternum II, preepisternum and postnotum; abdominal T II–VII each with weak posterior dark band. Wing ( Figure 4A View FIGURE 4 ) with 3 dark bands; veins R 2, RM, MCu and FCu, and surrounding areas of these veins dark brown. All legs pale yellow with dark subapex of femur and sub-base of tibia.

Head. Temporals 31, multiserial. Antenna lost. Clypeus with 15 setae. Lengths of palpomeres 1–5 (µm): 60, 65, 150, 230, 290.

Thorax. Aps 15. Scutum with distinct tubercle 10 µm high. Ac at least 40; Dc at least 34, multiserial; H absent; Pa 35, multiserial; Su 1; As II 2; Pes 3. Scutellum with transverse row of 18 large, apical setae and group of 10 small, anterior setae. Postnotum with 8 dorsal setae.

Wing. Length 3.5 mm. Squama with 34 setae. VR 0.97.

Legs. All tibial spurs bearing 10–16 side teeth. Foretibial comb absent; hind tibial comb with 10 bristles; all claws pointed apically. Ratios of leg segments: LR 1 0.78, BV 1 2.8, SV 1 2.3; LR 2 0.62, BV 2 3.7, SV 2 3.1; LR 3 0.82, BV 3 2.7, SV 3 2.2. Pulvilli small.

Hypopygium ( Figure 4B View FIGURE 4 ). T IX without setae. Gonocoxite more or less cylindrical, 200 µm long, 3.1 times as long as broad at middle, with more than 20 basal setae on inner surface. Gonostylus 105 µm long, parallel-sided or somewhat constricted near base in dorsal view, with apex bent ventrally. HR 1.9.

Remarks. In the original description of Macropelopia galbina, Wang et al. (2011) wrote, “the new species can be distinguished from other members of the genus by having triangular inferior volsella” (op. cit.: 4125), and drew the hypopygial gonocoxite with a triangular basal projection (op. cit.: fig. 6). However, reexamination of the holotype revealed that the projection was a mounting artifact caused by undue pressure on the gonocoxite. The male is characterized by the setiferous anepisternum, preepisternum and postnotum, the absence of a foretibial comb, the small pulvilli, and by the hypopygium with a bare anal tergite and somewhat parallel-sided gonostyli. The combination of the aforementioned characters places the species into Brundiniella defined by Roback (1978) and emended by Niitsuma (2003).

The male resembles that of the Japanese species Brundiniella yagukiensis Niitsuma. However , these two species can be easily separated by the wing pattern. In B. galbina the wing is three-banded, whereas it is two-banded with a pale apex in B. yagukiensis , according to Niitsuma (2003: 297, fig. 2).

The species is known only from the type locality, Yunnan Province in the Oriental China .
