Distribution and habitat. Micrablepharus maximiliani is widespread in the open vegetation corridor of central South America, occurring from the Caatinga, in northeastern Brazil, throughout the Cerrado, to the Pantanal, in Brazil ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 ). Dirksen & De la Riva (1999) also reported it from Bolivia, and Boettger (1885a, b) and Smith et al. (2011) from Paraguay. In Brazil, it is known from the states of Pará, Tocantins, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Sergipe, Alagoas, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and in the Distrito Federal. In Amazonia it occurs in enclaves of open vegetation in southwestern Pará and northwestern Rondônia states, in Brazil ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 ). Micrablepharus maximiliani is terrestrial and diurnal, inhabits caatinga, cerrado grasslands, cerrado sensu strictu, gallery forests, humid and dry chaco vegetation, salt marshes, dunes, and open forests (Freire 1996; Gainsbury & Colli 2003; Nogueira et al. 2009; Valdujo et al. 2009; Moura et al. 2010; Souza et al. 2010; Recoder et al. 2011), where it is mainly found on sandy open soil and among leaf litter, but also inside termite nests, amid scattered grasses or herbaceous beach vegetation, and on rock outcrops (Freire 1996; Rodrigues 1996, 2003; Mesquita et al. 2006b; Silva et al. 2006; Couto-Ferreira et al. 2011).
