Type (neotype, designated here):— Spain, Balearic Islands, Mallorca, Galatzó, en garrigas, 1 June 1952, Palau Ferrer 519, BC (no. 123587) ( Fig. 1 ). Isoneotypes: MA, barcodes MA 00164132, MA 00348445.

= R. lycioides var. prostrata Willkomm (1876: 295)

Type (lectotype designated by Rosselló & Sáez, 2000: 153):—[ Spain, Balearic Islands], Mallorca: Puig de Galatzó, 17 April 1873, H. M. Willkomm 284, COI-Willkomm (barcode COI 00064357 [bottom specimen]) (image of the lectotype available at http://coicatalogue. uc.pt/index.php?t=results_specimen&q=rhamnus +lycioides +var. +prostrata &orderby=relevance&orderdirection= DESC &size=10& page=0); an image of the lectotype is preserved at MA, with barcode MA 632427.

= R. lycioides var. balearicum Sennen & Pau (in Pau 1911: 17)

Type (lectotype, designated here):—[ Spain, Balearic Islands], Mallorca island, somme des montagnes, 1000 m, Bianor s.n., MA (no. 198772) ( Fig. 2 )

Note:— Pau (1911: 16–17) indicated in the protologue of R. lycioides var. balearicum “ Rh. lycioides Barceló fl. balear. 99 (p. p.). Prostratus, folia parva 7 mm, floribus minoribus. Barceló, l. c., conoció esta variedad, pues dice: ‘En las regiones elevadas y estériles, forma un matorral denso, achaparrado y tendido por tierra, con los ramos muy cortos, duros y espinosísimos’ - A esta forma nos referimos”. Pau (1911) stated that the plants were collected in the vicinity of Sóller by Brothers Sennen, Elías, and Bianor . According to Rosselló & Sáez (2000), no original material of R. lycioides var. balearicum was found at BC. However, in the herbarium at MA, there is a relevant sheet with original material, number 198772, and bears two plant fragments with leaves and flowers and two labels. The first label is handwritten by Bianor “ Rhamnus lycioides / Mai Juin / somme des montagnes / 1000 m / Bianor ”, and the second label is handwritten by Carlos Pau “ Bianor leg in Mallorca”. This material is undoubtedly original material, and therefore is designated as the lectotype of R. lycioides var. balearicum . Finally, this specimen can be identified as belonging to the current name R. oleoides subsp. bourgaeana , and Pau’s name is, therefore, treated as a heterotypic synonym.
