The protologue of Rhamnus hispanorum Gandoger (1905: 440) includes a Latin diagnosis “est forma peculiaris R. lycioidis foliis quam in typo duplo brevioribus semper tenuiter puberulis deciduis floribusque minoribus virescentibus acutis lobatis distincta, nec cum R. velutino Boiss. confundenda” and the provenance “Ubique ad rupes in provinciis Murciae, Valentiae Albacete et Baeticae orientalis ubi copiose legi. Floret aprilio-maio” (i.e., Spain, provinces of Murcia, Valencia, Albacete, Granada). We have found only one original specimen collected by Gandoger kept at M, with barcode M0211826. This sheet bears three plant fragments with leaves and flowers, and an original label handwritten by Gandoger “ Rhamnus hispanorum Gdgr ! sp. nova. / Murcia, Yecla, ad rupes –alt. 900 m. / 24.4.1902 / M. Gandoger”. This specimen is therefore designated as the lectotype of the name Rhamnus hispanorum . This material can be identified as belonging to aggregate R. lycioides Linnaeus (1753: 279) [lectotype designated by Jafri in Jafri & El-Gadi, 1977: 10): Herb. Linn. No. 262.3 (LINN); image available at http://linnean-online.org/2724/)], specifically to R. lycioides subsp. borgiae . Therefore Gandoger’s name R. hispanorum can be treated as a heterotypic synonym ( Rivas-Martínez & Pizarro 2011, 2015).
