2. Kalanchoe peltata (Baker) Baillon (1885: 468) View in CoL .
Basionym:— Kitchingia peltata Baker (1883: 140) View in CoL . Homotypic synonym:— Bryophyllum peltatum (Baker) V.V.Byalt, Udalova & I.M.Vassiljeva in Byalt (2008: 463). Type:— MADAGASCAR. Central Madagascar, Andrangaloaka, August 1880, G.W. Parker s.n. (lectotype K K000232805!, http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000232805), designated here.
Notes on the type:—In the protologue of the name Kitchingia peltata View in CoL , the basionym of Kalanchoe peltata, Baker (1883: 141) View in CoL cited two specimens: “Central Madagascar, Baron!” and “Forest of Andrangaloaka, Dr. Parker!”, without an indication of in which herbaria these specimens were kept. Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 48) noted the status of these specimens as syntypes, with Lucile Allorge-Boiteau also recording: “non vu par L. A. [Lucile Allorge-Boiteau]”, i.e., that she had not seen the specimens.
A specimen, K K000232805, at Herb. K catalogued under the name Bryophyllum peltatum , is available online (see weblink, above). The specimen was collected by G.W. Parker, without a number, in August 1880 at Andrangaloaka. This material was clearly available to Baker , who described Kalanchoe peltata View in CoL some two years later and it represents original material. We here designate this specimen as lectotype of the name Kalanchoe peltata View in CoL .
An earlier attempt by Byalt (2008: 463) to typify Bryophyllum peltatum on, presumably, this Parker specimen given as held at “(K?)”, was not effective as the words “hic designatus” or an equivalent was not used (Turland et al. 2018: Art. 7.11).
At least three specimens of Kitchingia peltata View in CoL that were collected by “Reverend R. Baron, F. L. S.” are kept at Herb. P., with all three labels stating “Purchased June, 1889”. It is not entirely clear whether the specimens were purchased by Herb. K from Rev. Baron, or whether Herb. P purchased the specimens from Herb. K. A further possibility is that the plant from which the specimens were made was purchased by Baron from someone else or from a local nursery. However, this is unlikely .
The Herb. P specimens can be identified as follows:
(1) P00430827 , Madagascar , R. Baron 1277, no date, donated to Herb. P by Herb. K, received by Herb. P on “ 25 juillet 1890 ” ;
(2) P00430828, Madagascar, R. Baron 1277, no date, no information on dates donated and received; and
(3) P00430829 , Madagascar , R. Baron 463, no date, donated to Herb. P by Herb. K, received by Herb. P on “ 25 juillet 1890 ” .
These three specimens, labelled “ Kitchingia peltata, Bkr View in CoL ” [ P00430827 and P00430829 ] and “ Kitchingia peltata View in CoL ; J. G. Baker ” [ P00430828 ], also qualify as original material, but are far more incomplete .
The typification of the name Kalanchoe peltata View in CoL with “ Hildebrandt 3702 [K?, LE [iso]]” by Descoings (2003: 168) was not effective as original material, the specimens of Baron and Parker (see above), are extant. No Hildebrandt specimens are mentioned in the protologue.
Additional material examined:—P00443749, P00443750, P00443751, P00443755, P00443758, P00443760, P00443761, P00443766, P00438275, P00443771, P00443772, P00443773, P00443774, P00443775, P00430821, P00430822, P00430825, P00430830, P00430832, and P00430833 [Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris ( France), Collection: Vascular plants (Herb. P)].
2a. Kalanchoe peltata var. stapfii View in CoL (Raym.-Hamet & H.Perrier) Perrier de la Bâthie (1928: 21).
Basionym:— Kalanchoe stapfii Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1915: 68) View in CoL , as ‘ Stapfi ’. Type:— MADAGASCAR. Antsiranana, Mt Tsaratanana, lichenised peaks, 2500 m asl, December 1912, [J.M.] H.[A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11823 (lectotype P, P00443780!, http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00443780), designated by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 50).
Note on the type:—In the protologue of the name Kalanchoe stapfii View in CoL , basionym of Kalanchoe peltata var. stapfii, Raymond-Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1915: 71) View in CoL stated: “Cette espèce qui est dédiée à M. le Docteur Stapf, curateur des Jardins Royaux de Kew, a été récoltée, en décembre 1912, par M. Perrier de la Bâthie, à une altitude d’environ 2.500 mètres, sur les cimes à lichens du Mont Tsaratanana.” [English: “This species, which is dedicated to Dr. Stapf, curator of the Royal Gardens, Kew, was collected in December 1912 by Mr. Perrier de la Bâthie, at an altitude of about 2,500 meters, on the lichenised peaks of Mount Tsaratanana.”]. No material was therefore mentioned in the protologue. Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 50) typified Kalanchoe peltata var. stapfii View in CoL with “Perrier 11823, Lecto-P”. Material of [J.M.] H.[A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 11823, held at P, qualifies as original material as it clearly was available to Raymond- Hamet & Perrier de la Bâthie (1915) when they described Kalanchoe stapfii View in CoL . The only specimen of Kalanchoe stapfii View in CoL deposited under Perrier de la Bâthie 11823 we could locate at Herb. P has the barcode P00443780.
Additional material examined:— MADAGASCAR. Mt Tsaratanana, cultivated in Antananarivo, 1925, Perrier de la Bâthie 16436 [P00443781 to P00443784]; Tsaratanana Massif, 1937, Humbert 18441 [P00443778 and P00443779]; and P00586475, P00586479, P00444127, P00550728, and P00550729 [Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris (France), Collection: Vascular plants (Herb. P)].
2b. Kalanchoe peltata var. mandrakensis (H.Perrier) Boiteau & Mannoni (1948: 8) View in CoL .
Basionym:— Kalanchoe mandrakensis Perrier de la Bâthie (1923: 453) View in CoL . Homotypic synonym:— Kitchingia mandrakensis (H.Perrier) Berger (1930: 408) View in CoL . Type:— MADAGASCAR. Antananarivo, Gorges de la Mandraka, Est d’Imerina, 1000 m asl, [J.M.] H.[A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 13905 (lectotype P, P00443786!, http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00443786), treated as “holo-” by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 50), second-step lectotype here designated.
Nomenclatural note:—The notation used in Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 50) where they treated “I, 4 K. peltata var. mandrakensis Perrier View in CoL ” deviates from the notation they used elsewhere (for example in comparison to “I, 3”, also on p. 50), so creating some confusion and the wrong impression that Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995) themselves proposed the publication of a name at new rank. This would have been an isonym (Turland et al. 2018: Art. 6.2 Note 2), as Boiteau & Mannoni (1948: 8) earlier transferred Kalanchoe mandrakensis View in CoL to Kalanchoe peltata View in CoL at the rank of variety and validly published Kalanchoe peltata var. mandrakensis View in CoL under Turland et al. (2018: Art. 41.1). Although Boiteau & Mannoni (1948: 8) cited the wrong page number—“408”, in the stead of “453”—on which the basionym of Kalanchoe peltata var. mandrakensis View in CoL , Kalanchoe mandrakensis View in CoL , was published ( Perrier de la Bâthie 1923: 453), under Turland et al. (2018: Art. 41.3) this does not preclude the valid publication of Kalanchoe peltata var. mandrakensis View in CoL .
Notes on the type:—Where Boiteau & Mannoni (1948: 8) validly published Kalanchoe peltata var. mandrakensis View in CoL , they cited four specimens, but did not indicate a type.
[English: “This species is quite common in the Mandraka Gorge in eastern Imerina, between 1,000 and 1,600 meters above sea level, in cool and shady places (no. 13905). It was introduced into the gardens of Antananarivo, and from there to the Museum, by Mr. François, Agricultural Engineer.”] Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 50) regarded Perrier de la Bâthie’s “no. 13905” that was cited by Perrier de la Bâthie (1923: 454) as “holo-P”. However, [J.M.] H.[A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 13905 consists of at least four specimens, with no indication that these four specimens bear a single, original label in common, and they are not labelled as being part of the same specimen (Turland et al. 2018: Art. 8.3). We therefore treat these four specimens as duplicates. Under Turland et al. (2018: Art. 9.10) we here correct use of “holo-” by Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 50) to lectotype, and designate one of the four [J.M.] H.[A.] Perrier de la Bâthie 13905 specimens as lectotype in a secondstep lectotypification.
The specimen, P00443786, here designated as lectotype of the basionym, Kalanchoe mandrakensis View in CoL , of Kalanchoe peltata var. mandrakensis View in CoL , was selected from the series of four specimens, all of which, as noted above, have the same Perrier de la Bâthie number, i.e., 13905, and all four were deposited at Herb. P. These specimens are all undated, but have Perrier de la Bâthie’s presumably original collecting labels affixed to them, and were likely all prepared by him. The specimens are: (1) P00443786; http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00443786; (2) P00443787; http:// coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00443787; (3) P00443788; http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/ p00443788; and (4) P00443789; http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00443789. All specimens are available for examination online.
Additional material examined:—P00443785, P00443790, P00443791, P00443793, P00443794, P00443795 [Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris ( France), Collection: Vascular plants (P)].
