( Figures 3 View Figure 3 , 4 View Figure 4 , 25B View Figure 25 )
Material
Holotype male. From Xiniu Cave [25 ◦ 03 ′ N, 105 ◦ 29 ′ E, 1242 m above sea level (asl)], Dushan town, Anlong county , Guizhou Province, 20 May 2006. GoogleMaps
Paratype. Seven males and six females, same data as holotype GoogleMaps .
Diagnosis
The new species is similar to Q. lycotropa but can be distinguished by the triangular prolateral lobe (horseshoe-shaped in Q. lycotropa , Figure 3A View Figure 3 ) and the erect median apophysis (transverse, serrate edges in Q. lycotropa , Figure 25D View Figure 25 ) in male.
Description
Male holotype. Total length 2.30. Carapace smooth, 0.97 long, 0.82 wide, height at fovea 0.81 times carapace width, yellowish; thoracic fovea brown, needle-shaped ( Figure 4B View Figure 4 ). Clypeus 0.15 high, yellowish. Chelicerae 0.53 long, yellowish, with six teeth and three denticles on promargin and four denticles on retromargin; eight short setae on base ( Figure 3C View Figure 3 ). Eyeless, only remain ALEMs on ocular area, two setae behind ocular area ( Figure 4B View Figure 4 ). Sternum 0.61 long, 0.53 wide, haired; labium 0.06 long, 0.17 wide, yellowish.
Leg formula: 1423. Leg measurements (femur + patella + tibia + metatarsus + tarsus = total): I: 2.65 + 0.36 + 2.65 + 2.30 + 1.53 = 9.49; II: 2.30 + 0.36 + 2.40 + 1.99 + 1.33 = 8.36; III: 1.89 + 0.36 + 1.89 + 1.73 + 1.12 = 6.99; IV: 2.40 + 0.36 + 2.45 + 2.19 + 1.33 = 8.72. Leg yellowish, tibia I and II with rows of fine hairs on ventral surface, sparse in II; preening comb occurs ventroapically on the metatarsus of leg II and III.
Palpal coxae 0.39 long, 0.14 wide. Palpal measurements (femur + patella + tibia + tarsus = total): 0.55 + 0.21 + 0.28 + 0.32 = 1.36; the length of tibia 1.38 times that of patella. Palpal tibia with three dorsal trichobothria ( Figure 3A,B View Figure 3 ), five ventral spines on TBS forked at apex, and a gracile spine near the TBS ( Figure 3B View Figure 3 ). Tarsus dwindles distally, with relatively shallow AC in middle part, RA in adjacent apical part in retrolateral view; retrolateral side with row of short setae on RA and at basal part of tarsus and a group of long setae at apical part ( Figure 3B View Figure 3 ). Bulb suboval, PL broadly triangular ( Figure 3A View Figure 3 ); M erect, strip-shaped, distinctly curved distally ( Figure 25B View Figure 25 ); PF transparent, triangular ( Figure 3A,B View Figure 3 ).
Abdomen creamy yellow, without markings, haired, 1.02 long, 0.61 wide.
Female paratype. Total length 2.30. Carapace smooth, 0.97 long, 0.82 wide, height at fovea 0.81 times carapace width, yellowish; thoracic fovea brown, needle-shaped. Clypeus 0.15 high, yellowish. Chelicerae 0.53 long, yellowish, with six teeth and two denticles on promargin of fang furrow and four denticles on retromargin; eight short setae on base ( Figure 3D View Figure 3 ). Eyeless, only ALEMs remain on ocular area, two setae behind ocular area ( Figure 4D View Figure 4 ). Sternum 0.54 long, 0.61 wide, haired; labium 0.04 long, 0.18 wide, yellowish.
Leg formula: 1423. Leg measurements (femur + patella + tibia + metatarsus + tarsus = total): I: 2.24 + 0.41 + 2.35 + 1.79 + 1.33 = 8.11; II: 2.04 + 0.36 + 1.94 + 1.53 + 0.61 = 6.48; III: 1.68 + 0.36 + 1.53 + 1.07 + 0.92 = 5.56; IV: 2.04 + 0.36 + 2.09 + 1.73 + 1.12 = 7.34. Leg yellowish, preening comb occurs ventroapically on the metatarsus of leg II and III.
Palpal coxae 0.32 long, 0.28 wide. Palpal measurements (femur + patella + tibia + tarsus = total): 0.58 + 0.23 + 0.37 + 0.61 = 1.79.
Abdomen creamy yellow, haired, without markings, 1.33 long, 0.87 wide. Epigynal plate broadly triangular, simple ( Figure 3E View Figure 3 ); internal genitalia with a pair of spermathecae, coiled sperm duct, horned atrium ( Figure 3F View Figure 3 ).
Distribution
The species is known only from the type locality ( Figure 2 View Figure 2 ).
Etymology
The specific name comes from Latin “ triangula ”, meaning “triangular”, referring to the shape of the prolateral lobe.
Level of cave adaptation
This species lives entirely in the dark parts of caves and has no functioning eyes and no pigmentation. Troglobitic species.
Natural history
Small spider generally restricted to moist karst caves. Spiders were found from the completely dark and constant-temperature zone with relatively high humidity but without strong wind or air flows around the cave. Its web is a woven sheet about 10 cm in diameter, along the cave base plate and sediments, such as clay, silt and gravel.
