Centris (Ptilocentris) horvathi Friese, 1901 View in CoL
Centris horvathi Friese, 1901: 118 View in CoL
Centris horvathi View in CoL holotype (♀): Moure et al. (2007) were unable to locate the holotype but it is in fact in HNHM. Friese examined a single female, the holotype, labeled “ Peru / Callanga”, “ Centris View in CoL ♀ / horvathii / 1900 Friese det. [printed] / n.sp.”. The species was named in honor of the HNHM Zoology section director, Géza Horváth (1847–1937), but original spelling in the description as “ horváthi View in CoL ” or from the label as “horvathii” is incorrect ( Rasmussen & Ascher 2008). Callanga was an Inca economic outpost in the Peruvian tropical Andean foot-hills where coca and other crops were grown centuries ago ( Gade 1999). The collector of this specimen is not indicated, commercial collectors known to have been active in Callanga around the turn of the last century are the Garlepp brothers ( Gade 1999; Rasmussen 2012), Gustav (1862–1907) and Otto (1864–1959), who likely collected the type specimen. The locality is the Rio Callanga, a tributary from Rio Piñi Piñi and Rio Alto Madre de Dios. Moure et al. (2007) suggested that Callanga is in Lima, west of the Andes, which is an error.
