Material examined. Venezuela: Cubagua Island (MZUSP-9481). Brazil: Rio Grande do Norte—Praia de Cibaúna, 3 males, 4 females, 2 ovigerous females (MZUSP-6963). Pernambuco—Recife, Boa Viagem, 1 male (MZUSP- 868). Alagoas—Passo de Camaragibe, 1 female (LabMar-1148). Bahia—Salvador, Praia do Farol da Barra, 1 male (MZUSP-17620). Espírito Santo—Guarapari, Praia das Castanheiras, 2 males, 1 female, 2 ovigerous females (MZUSP-6993). Rio de Janeiro—Angra dos Reis, Ilha Grande dos Porcos, 3 males, 1 female (MNRJ-8645). São Paulo—Guarujá, Perequê, 1 male (MZUSP-18687). Paraná—Paranaguá, Ilha do Mel, Praia de Fora, 1 male (MZUSP-11076). Santa Catarina—Ilha São Francisco, 3 males, 3 ovigerous females (MZUSP-9977); 16 males, 4 females, 6 ovigerous females (MZUSP-10596).
Recognition characters. Carapace subquadrate, as broad as long in males, slightly broader than long in females; posterolateral regions plicate. Front with tuft of short plumose setae. Chelipeds subequal, fairly rugose, with 3 longitudinal rows of large, flatenned, imbricate tubercles bearing fine, short pubescence; merus striated, a single tubercle on flexor margin; flexor margin of carpus with 3 tubercles; propodus with flatenned granules on cutting face, outer row of tubercles double, extending onto pollex; fingers of major cheliped with hiatus, tuft of dense pubescence on cutting face. Walking legs covered with long plumose setae, mainly on carpus and propodus; propodus with 4 spines on flexor margin, dactylus with 3 spines on flexor margin. No gonopods in males. Telson composed of 5 plates.
Habitat. From intertidal region down to 40 m, in small cave systems formed by several sessile species, including sand reefs of Phragmatopoma lapidosa (Annelidae: Polychaeta); and under rocks (Werding 1977; Micheletti-Flores & Negreiros-Fransozo 1999).
Geographic distribution. Western Atlantic—USA, eastern Florida; Mexico, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Campeche and Quintana Roo; Virgin Islands, St. Thomas and St. John; Colombia, Santa Marta, Cabo de la Vela and Rosario Islands; Venezuela, Margarita and Cubagua Islands; Trinidad; and Brazil (from Pará to Santa Catarina). Eastern Pacific—Ecuador, La Libertad; and Peru, Cancas.
