Material examined. Brazil: Ceará—Acaraú, R/V “Almirante Saldanha”, st. 1710a, 02° 33.0 S,039° 41.5 W, 31 m, 1 male (MZUSP-8948). Paraíba—Proj. Algas, st. 69-b, 4 males, 1 female (MZUSP-11854). Pernambuco—Fernando de Noronha, 1 male (MZUSP-20250). Espírito Santo—Trindade Island, 20°51’791”S, 40°28’422”W, 1 male (MZUSP-20478). Rio de Janeiro—Cabo Frio, Arraial do Cabo, Prainha, 1 female (MNRJ-6476). São Paulo—Proj. Vitória, Ilhota das Cabras, 1 male, 1 ovigerous female (MZUSP-16713).

Recognition characters. Carapace rounded, slightly longer than broad, with short setae and transversal rugae on branchial and gastric regions; acute hepatic spine. Front broad, with serrate margin. Inner orbital angle produced into acute spine; outer orbital angle produced into serrate tooth with spine; small supraorbital spine present. Basisischium of antenna with flattened, spine-tipped lobe on mesial margin. Chelipeds equal, granulate; carpus with 4–6 acute teeth on extensor margin, flexor margin with row of spines, short setae; propodus serrate distally on extensor margin, row of spines and short setae proximally on extensor margin. Walking legs pubescent; merus with row of spines on extensor margin; propodus with 4 spines on flexor margin; dactylus with 3 spines on flexor margin. Gonopods present in males. Telson composed of 7 plates.

Habitat. On corals, calcareous algae, sponges and under rocks; down to depths of 140 meters (Veloso & Melo 1993). Also found on Halimeda (Chlorophyta) bottoms.

Geographic distribution. Western Atlantic—USA, Florida; Mexico, Yucatan; Cuba; Puerto Rico; Barbados; Colombia, Providence and Santa Marta Islands; Curacao and Bonaire; Venezuela, Los Roques, Cubagua and Gran Roque Islands; Trinidad and Tobago; and Brazil (Fernando de Noronha and Trindade Islands and from Maranhão to São Paulo).

Remarks. This species is additionally recorded from a new locality (Trindade Island).
