Remark. Moore (1872) described the species based on an unknown number of syntypes of both sexes deposited in two collections. In order to stabilize the nomenclature, here we designate the male specimen deposited in OUMNH and labeled as “Type” as lectotype.
Diagnosis. Forewing length is 17–18.5 mm in males and 20–21.5 mm in females. Cyana gazella is an unmistakable species due to its irregularly reticulate forewing pattern. Among other Cyana species, only C. kubani Černý, 2016 (illustrated by Černý 2016 and Bayarsaikhan & Bae 2016) has similar reticulate forewing pattern, but it differs clearly from C. gazella by its much smaller size, narrower forewing of both sexes, broader pattern elements, pale orange hindwing (in C. gazella the hindwing is white or white with grayish suffusion), and its principally different genitalia structures (illustrated by Černý 2016 and Bayarsaikhan & Bae 2016). The male genital capsule of C. gazella is similar to that of C. dohertyi , but differs by the basally broader uncus, the slightly broader valva, the welldeveloped medial crest of valva, and the slightly shorter distal section of valva and the distal saccular process. The vesica of C. gazella differs clearly from those of other relatives by the long dorsal diverticulum bearing a cluster of numerous robust spinules, and the presence of a broad distal cluster of robust spinules. The female genitalia of C. gazella are most similar to those of C. dohertyi , but differ by the broader and less sclerotized posterior section of corpus bursae with a lateral sclerotized broadly rounded protrusion.
Distribution. North and North East India (Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, north of West Bengal, Meghalaya, Assam) ( Moore 1872; Strand 1922; Smetacek 2008), Nepal ( Kishida 1993), China (Yunnan) (present study), North Thailand and North Vietnam ( Černý & Pinratana 2009).
