DISTRIBUTION. — This species is widespread throughout the country, where it inhabits both savannahs and forested areas. Causus maculatus had previously been mentioned from Togo by Hughes (1978), Roman (1984), de Massary (1993), Spawls & Branch (1995), David & Ineich (1999) and Leaché et al. (2006). However, specimens of Causus rhombeatus (Lichtenstein, 1823) were cited from Togo by Werner (1898), Sternfeld (1908b, 1909: 24), Hulselmans & Verheyen (1970) and Hulselmans et al. (1970). According to the ranges of these species (see Hughes 1978), they should be referred to as Causus maculatus .
