Subgenus Stelis Panzer View in CoL

Diagnosis. Stelis s. str. can be distinguished from other North American Anthidiini by the combination of fore and mid tibiae with two apical spines; hind basitarsus posteriorly without longitudinal carina and associated groove; propodeum without broad, horizontal, pitted basal zone, though may have narrow pitted area sloping posteriorly; and omaulus rounded, not angulate to carinate. In addition, in many Stelis s. str. the second recurrent vein is basal to the second transverse cubital vein.
