Comparison. Stethantyx trepida sp. nov. is most similar to S. propodeator Khalaim & Broad as both have reddish orange mesosoma with black propodeum, black head and antenna, distinctly punctate frons and mesoscutum and broad rectangular basal area of propodeum, but differs from this species by longer malar space and longer ovipositor.
Description. Female. Body length 5.2 mm. Fore wing length 3.7 mm.
Head strongly and roundly narrowed behind eyes in dorsal view; temple 0.47× as long as eye width. Mandible with upper tooth much longer than lower tooth. Clypeus weakly separated from face, almost flat in lateral view, smooth, densely punctate in upper 0.7. Malar space 0.9× as long as basal width of mandible. Antennal flagellum very weakly narrowed towards apex, with 26 flagellomeres; all flagellomeres, except basal and apical ones, 1.4– 1.5× as long as broad. Face with longitudinal prominence centrally. Face, frons, vertex and temple very densely punctate on finely granulate, dull surface (punctures are most distinct on frons). Hypostomal carina absent.
Notaulus as a distinct wrinkle. Mesoscutum and scutellum finely granulate and very densely punctate.
Scutellum with lateral longitudinal carinae reaching from its base to almost posterior end and then indistinct. Foveate groove of mesopleuron situated in anterior 0.7 of mesopleuron, strongly curved anteriorly, deep and with coarsely transverse carinae, not reaching anterior margin of mesopleuron. Mesopleuron mostly finely granulate and densely punctate, impunctate and almost smooth anteriorly above foveate groove. Propodeum granulate, dorsolateral area with dense punctures; all carinae very strong, transverse carina and apical longitudinal carinae with adjacent short wrinkles. Basal area of propodeum almost twice as long as broad, rectangular, 0.65× as long as apical area. Propodeal spiracle separated from pleural carina by 1.5× diameter of spiracle. Apical area flat, anteriorly truncate.
Fore wing with first and second sections of radius angled 100°. Intercubitus longer than abscissa of cubitus between intercubitus and second recurrent vein, both these veins not thickened. Metacarpus reaching apex of fore wing. Hind wing with nervellus vertical.
Legs slender. Hind femur 4.2× as long as broad, and 0.86× as long as tibia. Hind spurs slightly curved at apex. Tarsal claws rather weakly curved.
First tergite slender, 4.0× as long as posteriorly broad, smooth with petiole striate laterally before glymma. Glymma situated slightly behind middle of tergite, joining by shallow furrow to ventral part of postpetiole. Second tergite 2.2× as long as anteriorly broad. Thyridial depression about 3.0× as long as broad. Ovipositor more strongly upcurved apically, with shallow dorsal subapical depression; sheath twice as long as first tergite and hind tibia.
Head black; clypeus and malar space yellowish brown; palpi and mandible (teeth reddish) yellow. Antenna with scape and pedicel yellow-brown, flagellum black. Mesosoma uniformly reddish brown with propodeum black. Pterostigma brown. Legs brownish yellow, hind femur and tibia blackish. First tergite of metasoma black. Metasoma behind first tergite brownish yellow ventrally to dark brown dorsally, second and following tergites with hind margin narrowly yellow banded dorsally.
Male. Unknown.
Etymology. Named from the Latin trepidus (nervous, jumpy, agitated).
Material examined. Holotype female (ZMUT), Ecuador, Orellana Prov., Onkone Gare, 0º39′25.7′′ S, 76º27′10.8′′ W, 216.3 m, canopy fogging, 12.II.1995, coll. T.L. Erwin et al.
