Niphidium J.Sm., Hist. Fil. View in CoL 99. 1875.

Niphidium View in CoL is characterized by large, coriaceous, strap-like blades with a single row of sori between the major lateral veins, and intricate venation with multiple veins to each sorus ( Lellinger 1973). It is most closely related to Campyloneurum View in CoL , which has 2 or more rows of sori between the major lateral veins on excurrent veinlets. Niphidium View in CoL is a neotropical genus of ten species, revised by Lellinger (1973); six species are known from Bolivia.

Characters helpful in distinguishing species include rhizome thickness, rhizome scales (appressed vs. spreading, shape, coloration, cell pattern and shape, clathrate or not), persistence (or not) of rachis scales, and blade width and length/width ratio.
