Biology. Antherophagus pallidivestis have been taken in Lindgren funnels, UV light traps, flight intercept traps, and by hand. Some specimens were associated with B. centralis and Bombus bifarius Cresson, 1878 including an individual which was taken from a B. centralis nest, and an individual attached to the antenna of a B. bifarius worker.
Additional Remarks. There are two large, yellow species of Antherophagus known from Montana, A. pallidivestis and A. ochraceus . The easiest way to distinguish these species is the color of the setae, which are golden in A. ochraceus and silver in A. pallidivestis . Unfortunately, this character can be difficult to use without examples of both species to compare, and differences in lighting may further complicate species-level identification, especially when only one species is available. Fortunately, large, mixed series can be avoided as the two setae types look very different when placed next to one another. For males, the characters of the clypeal notch may be helpful, as the clypeal notch of A. pallidivestis is larger in terms of width ( Fig. 6 View Figs ) than that of A. ochraceus ( Fig. 2 View Figs ). Pelletier and Hébert (2019) offered eye size as a potential character to differentiate between these species. Unfortunately, the size of the eye is sex dependent, with males generally having larger eyes than conspecific females, and is variable even within a single sex and species. Likewise, the comparison between the length of the temple and that of the eye, another character proposed by Pelletier and Hébert (2019), has proved unreliable for differentiating these species in Montana.
