Edessa metallica sp. nov.

( Figs. 1–3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ; 16)

Material examined. PANAMA. Holotype female, Independencia, 28.01.1950 ( ZSMC). Measurements. Total length: 17.9; head length: 2.1; head width: 2.9; pronotal width: 17.1; abdominal width: 10.4.

Body dorsally dark and iridescent, metallic blue or green. Ventrally dark castaneous with metallic green or blue shine; abdomen with three longitudinal reddish bands. Head in front of eyes dark; juga with metallic green shine. Fourth and fifth antennal segments missing. Anterolateral margins of pronotum rugose with a short red stripe not reaching base of humeral angles. Propleura densely punctured. Metasternal process dark brown branches divergent, slightly curved, and evanescent; anterior bifurcation not completely excavated leaving free part of the branches short ( Figs. 2–3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ).

Male. Unknown.

Female ( Figs. 1–3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ). Gonocoxite 8 dark castaneous, convex, acuminate, long, surpassing level of the gonocoxite 9, distal margin sinuous and excavated medially leaving part of gonocoxite 9 exposed. Laterotergite 8 reddish with inner dark castaneous stripe; Laterotergites 9 dark castaneous, subtriangular with apex rounded.

Comments. This species can be separated from the others by the predominantly metallic blue dorsal color and the short reddish stripe on the anterolateral margins of the pronotum; the ventral large red stripes contrasting with remaining dark metallic green or blue on its abdomen; the shape of the metasternal process; and the shape of the gonocoxite 8. In this species and E. splendens sp. nov. the humeral angles are longer than in E. preclara sp. nov.
