PHILOBRYIDAE View in CoL

The Philobryidae has its highest species diversities in the southern temperate and cold water oceans. The greatest diversities occur in New Zealand and South Australia with numbers of species also in southern Africa and the Magellanic region of South America. They are uncommon in tropical waters but have been found off Queensland, Hawaii, Philippines and Japan. They have also been reported as common in marine caves from the Ryukyu Islands ( Hayami and Kase, 1993).

The generic definitions used here follow those of Tevesz (1977), which are less restrictive than those given by Powell (1979) or Lamprell and Healy (1998).
