Thrips shiranesanus View in CoL sp. n.

( Figs. 201–206 View FIGURES 194–206 )

Female macroptera. Distended body length 1.9–2.0 mm. Body uniformly dark brown; antennal segments I to II dark brown, III to IV yellow, V slightly shaded, VI to VIII brown; fore wings dark with basal fourth pale, clavus pale with extreme base dark; all femora dark brown, fore tibiae dark brown with distal third pale, mid and hind tibiae dark brown with apex pale, all tarsi yellow; prominent body setae pale brown. Head ( Fig. 201 View FIGURES 194–206 ) 0.7–0.9 times as long as wide, slightly constricted just behind compound eyes and rounded at cheeks, often with a few small tubercles arranged longitudinally in front of eyes, sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae dorsally, weakly sculptured within ocellar triangle. Ocellar setae III at outside of ocellar triangle, slightly longer than longitudinal diameter of hind ocelli. Postocular setae the longest and subequal length to ocellar setae III, II and IV very small. Antennae ( Fig. 202 View FIGURES 194–206 ) 7-segmented, II with no or very weak microtrichial rows on dorsal surface, III the longest, III to IV without apical neck and with forked sensoria long, III to VI rounded at each side, IV to V pedicelate, VI with 11 setae. Antennal segments I to VII length/width ratio as follows: 0.8–0.9, 1.1–1.4, 2.2–2.5, 2.2–2.5, 1.9–2.1, 2.2– 2.6, 2.6–3.3. Pronotum ( Fig. 201 View FIGURES 194–206 ) 0.6–0.8 times as long as wide, sculptured with narrow spaced transverse anastomosing striae, with 15–25 discal setae; posteroangular setae 2 pairs, setae I 0.5–0.7 times as long as pronotal median length and longer than setae II; posterior margin with 3 pairs of setae, setae I the much longer than remaining setae. Mesonotum sculptured with narrow spaced transverse anastomosing striae except anteromedially; CPS present anteromedially. Metascutum ( Fig. 203 View FIGURES 194–206 ) sculptured with longitudinal ill-formed reticulations medially; median pair of setae far from anterior margin, 0.5–0.7 times as long as metascutal median length; CPS present. Fore wing costal vein with 22–28 setae, first vein with long gap in setal row, seven basal and three distal setae, second vein with 10–13 setae. Abdominal tergite II with 4 lateral marginal setae; tergites III to VII ( Fig. 204 View FIGURES 194–206 ) with small scallops along posterior margin; tergites V to VIII with no lines of sculpture extending to mesad of S1 setae, a few lines present anterior to S1 setae; tergite VIII ( Fig. 205 View FIGURES 194–206 ) with posteromarginal comb complete, but microtrichia short and irregular in length; tergite IX with both anterior and posterior pairs of CPS, S1, S2, S3 and MD setae each 1.9–2.1, 2.1–2.3, 2.2–2.6 and 0.5–0.7 times as long as median length of the tergite; tergite X with S1 and S2 setae each 1.6–1.8 and 1.6–1.8 times as long as median length of the tergite; sternites without discal setae; sternite I with two microsetae anteromedially; sternite II with two pairs of posteromarginal setae; sternite VII ( Fig. 206 View FIGURES 194–206 ) with S1 setae far from posterior margin, S3 setae usually absent at each or one side; pleurotergites without ciliate microtrichia and discal setae. Ovipositor 1.5–1.9 times as long as pronotal median length.

Measurements of holotype female. Distended body length 2000. Head length 127 (length including anterior prolongation 139), width across cheeks 171; compound eye dorsal length 77, width 45. Pronotal median length 150, width 190; posteroangular setae I length 96–101, setae II length 88–92, posteromarginal setae I 40–41. Metascutal median length 83, median setae length 53–60. Fore wing length 875, width at middle 70. Abdominal tergite IX median length 78; S1 setae length 160–163, S2 setae length 174–175, S3 setae length 183–191, MD setae length 44–48; tergite X length 91; S1 setae length 166, S2 setae length 156–160. Ovipositor length 280. Antennal segments I to VII length (width) as follows: 33 (39), 43 (31), 65 (26), 60 (24), 43 (21), 55 (23), 24 (8).

Male. Unknown.

Type series. Holotype female, Japan, Honshu, Gunma Pref., Kuni-mura, nr. Mt. Shirane-san (N36°38’43” E138°31’42”, alt. 2100m), on flowers of Ixeris sp. [ Asteraceae ], 31-vii-2007, M. Masumoto.

Paratypes: 16 females, same data as holotype . 10 females, same locality as holotype, on flowers of Hypericum sp. [Guttiferae], 10-viii-2007, M. Masumoto . 4 females, same locality as holotype, on flower of Hypericum sp. , 27- vii-2011, M. Masumoto. The holotype and most paratypes are deposited in TUA .

Biology. This species apparently occurs on yellow flowers in alpine areas of Japan.

Comments. This large dark species is similar to T. floreus but has the following unique character state: abdominal sternite VII usually with two pairs of posteromarginal setae, sometimes two on one side and three on other side.
