Paraleia Tonnoir 1929: 611 View in CoL . Type-species, P. fulvescens Tonnoir View in CoL (orig. des.). Ref.—Oliveira & Amorim 2012: 3 (key for the Neotropical species, new species).
SELKIRKIUS Enderlein 1940: 670 . Type-species, S. nephrodops Enderlein View in CoL (orig. des.). Ref.— Freeman 1954: 26 (syn.).
P. castanea Freeman 1951: 77 View in CoL , fig. 150 (♂ terminalia). Type-locality: Argentina, Río Negro, Lago Correntoso. Holotype ♂, NHM.
( Figure 104 View FIGURES 100–112 )
Notes. The type series included the male holotype and six male paratypes. Six males labeled as paratypes are at the NHM, but only five of them have type number labels ( BMNH (E) # 254160-4). The labels of the holotype are as follows: “ Paraleia / castanea [hw] / Freeman. / HOLOTYPE ” [printed on red label]” // [male terminalia on a microslide attached to an acetate sheet] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “Lago Correntoso. / 18–25.xi.1926.” // “ Argentina: / Terr. Río Negro / F. & M. Edwards / B.M. 1927–63.” // “BMNH(E) # / 254159”. The holotype is in good condition. The entire abdomen was removed from the holotype, part of which is glued to the base of the micropin .
P. caudata Edwards 1933: 310 View in CoL . Type-locality: Bolivia, Yungasweg , 2500–4000 m. Syntypes ♂, MTD; ♀, NHM .
( Figure 105 View FIGURES 100–112 )
Notes. The type series included a male and a female syntypes. The male syntype is in the MTD and the female is at the NHM. In Papavero (1978), the type-locality is incorrectly referred to as “Mapiri, Cordilleras, 4000–5000 m ”. The labels in the syntype are: “ Bolivia [pr] 11.x.04 [hw] / Yungasweg [pr] / 2500–4000 m [hw] / “B.M. / 1938-162” [hw] // “ Paraleia / caudata Edw [hw] /F.W. Edwards / det. 1930 [pr]” // “ SYNTYPE [pr] / Paraleia / caudata [hw] / Edwards / det. J.E. Chainey 1995 [pr]”// “BMNH(E) # / 254172”. Its is preferable to verify the condition of the male syntype in the MTD before a decision about the designation of a lectotype .
P. cinerea Freeman 1951: 76 View in CoL , figs. 147 (♂ terminalia), 306 (wing). Type-locality: Argentina, Río Negro, Lago Correntoso. Holotype ♂, NHM.
( Figure 106 View FIGURES 100–112 )
Notes. The type series included the male holotype, four male and six female paratypes, of which the holotype, three male and five female paratypes are at the NHM . The holotype labels are: “ Paraleia / cinerea [hw] / Freeman. / HOLOTYPE ” [printed on red label]” // [male terminalia originally on a microslide attached to an acetate sheet] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “Lago Correntoso. / 18–25.xi.1926.” // “ Argentina: / Terr. Río Negro / F. & M. Edwards / B.M. 1927–63.” // “BMNH(E) # / 254175”. The abdomen of the holotype is missing. The paratypes are numbered ( BMNH (E) # 254176-83) .
P. falcigera Freeman 1951: 76 View in CoL , fig. 148 (♂ terminalia). Type-locality: Argentina, Río Negro, Puerto Blest. Holotype ♂, NHM.
( Figure 107 View FIGURES 100–112 )
Notes. The type series included only the male holotype. The labels are: “ Paraleia / falcigera [hw] / Freeman. /
HOLOTYPE ” [printed on red label]” // [male terminalia on a microslide attached to an acetate sheet] // “HOLO- /
TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “Nahuel Huapi, / Puerto Blest. / 2–3.xii.1926.” //
“ Argentina: / Terr. Río Negro / F. & M. Edwards / B.M. 1927–63.” // “BMNH(E) # / 254171”. The type is in good condition, only the distal half of the abdomen removed and mounted with the terminalia .
P. funerea Freeman 1951: 76 View in CoL , fig. 149 (♂ terminalia). Type-locality: Argentina, Río Negro, Lago Gutiérrez. Holotype ♂, NHM.
( Figure 108 View FIGURES 100–112 )
Notes. The type series included the male holotype and six male paratypes, of which the holotype and five paratypes are at the NHM. Holotype labels are as follows: “ Paraleia / funerea [hw] / Freeman. / HOLOTYPE ” [printed on red label]” // [male terminalia on a microslide attached to an acetate sheet] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “Lago Gutierrez / 3–14.xi.1926.” // “ Argentina: / Terr. Río Negro / F. & M. Edwards / B.M. 1927–63.” // “BMNH(E) # / 254164”. The holotype is in fair condition, the abdomen has been removed and not mounted with the terminalia. One of the paratypes ( BMNH (E) # 254165-8) had the male terminalia dissected.
P. nephrodops ( Enderlein) 1940: 671 , figs. 41–42 (wing, ♂ terminalia) ( Selkirkius ). Type-locality: Juan Fernandez Isl. , Masatierra. Ref.— Freeman 1954: 28, figs. 145 (♂ terminalia), 305 (wing). Holotype ♂, MTD.
( Figure 109 View FIGURES 100–112 )
Notes. The NHM does not have a paratype of this species, but specimens examined by Freeman (1954) come from the type-locality and could be conspecific.
P. nubilipennis ( Walker) 1837: 334 View in CoL ( Leia View in CoL ). Type-locality: Straits of Magellan , Port Famine. Ref. — Freeman 1951: 75, figs. 145 (♂ terminalia), 305 (wing). Holotype ♂, NHM.
( Figure 110 View FIGURES 100–112 )
Notes. The original publication does not indicate the number of specimens on which the description was made. The NHM has a single type specimen which is in fairly good condition, assumed to be a holotype. The head was lost, but both wings are present and the body and wing colour patterns are well preserved. The distal half of the abdomen has been removed and is mounted on a separate base. The labels of the type are: “Type” [printed on a round label with dark green border”] “ Leia / nubilipennis / Walk.” [handwritten above and below the printing] // “S. America / Capt. King” // [two pieces of folded of paper with handwritings] // “b3 / 43” [handwritten on a small, rounded label without printed borders] // [male terminalia dissected and mounted on an acetate sheet] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black over a rounded label with red border] // HOLOTYPE of / Leia nubilipennis / Walker 1837 / Det. N.P. Wyatt 2002 / PORT FAMINE: Straits of / Magallan, P.P. King”. // “BMNH(E) # 254158.
P. peruviana Edwards 1933: 309 View in CoL . Type-locality: Peru, Mamara. Holotype ♂, MTD.
( Figure 111 View FIGURES 100–112 )
Notes. The type series included the male holotype and two female paratypes, of which one paratype is at the NHM ( BMNH (E) # 254173). The specimen is in excellent condition .
Paraleia sp. Freeman 1951: 77 . Type-locality: Argentina, Río Negro, Puerto Blest. ♀, NHM.
( Figure 112 View FIGURES 100–112 )
Notes. This species has not been formally described, but is referred to in Freeman (1951: 77). The unit tray with Paraleia species has a label indicating a possible new species that probably corresponds to this species.
