Type: MYANMAR. Upper Burma, Upper Chindwin , Byinbou , Dec 1907, A. E. Meebold 7823 (holotype: K! [ K000848691 ] ; isotypes: E! [E00275442], K! [K000848692]).
= Millettia lucida Gagnep., Notul. Syst. (Paris) 2: 359. 1913 ( Gagnepain 1913).
Type: LAOS. Khammouane. Phon Thane, C. J. Spire 216 (lectotype: P! [P00800926], designated here; isolectotypes: K! [K000848786], P! [P 02141857]).
Description. Trees; branches grey, with white lenticels. Buds axillary, rounded; scales 6–8, broadly ovate, ciliate. Stipules narrowly oblanceolate, 2.6–3.5 × 0.4–0.9 cm, caducous. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate; leaf rachis 4–12 cm long; stipels absent; leaflets (3–)5–9, papery or subcoriaceous, opposite or rarely subalternate, narrow ovate to lanceolate, 4.8–11.7 × 1.6–3.4 cm, length/width ratio 2.3–5.0, base cuneate to round, apex acuminate to caudate, glabrous above, pubescent below; principal lateral veins inconspicuous, 7‒14 on each side of midvein, curved apically near margins; petiolules 4‒6 mm. Pseudoracemes laxly flowered, 4–16 cm long, ramous near the base, forming leafy pseudopanicle; brachyblasts very indistinct, each always with 2 flowers; rachis pubescent; bracts subtending the indistinct brachyblasts membranous, narrow oblong, 14–19 × 2–3 mm; floral bracts filiform, ca 8 mm long, inserted at the base of pedicel; bracteoles absent or strongly reduced at the middle of the pedicel; pedicel 0.7–1.5 cm long, slender, pubescent. Flowers 1.5–1.8 cm long; receptacle hollow, with distinct longitudinal ridges outside; calyx campanulate, 4–6 mm high, pubescent outside and slightly hairy inside, 4-toothed; lobes triangular, 3.2–3.8 × 2.3–3.1 mm; petals white, glabrous; standard petal suborbicular, reflexed, apex rounded to emarginate, without basal calluses; wing petals oblong, base auriculate, apex obtuse; keel petals falcate, base truncate, apex obtuse, pocketed at side; stamens 10, monadelphous; disk absent; ovary linear, with 4 ovules, stipitate; stipe ca 5 mm long; style ca 4 mm long, incurved, glabrous; stigma small, capitate. Pod dehiscent, flat, oblong, base broad cuneate, apex broad cuneate and beaked, 14– 27 × 2.3–4.4 cm, woody, smooth, without veins outside, stipitate; stipe 0.9–2.5 cm long, 3.3–3.6 mm broad, glabrous; fruiting pedicel 0.9–1.7 cm long, glabrous. Seeds 2–4, flat, suborbicular, 1.3–1.5 × 0.9–1.4 cm, brownish and shiny, with a thin testa and a well-developed aril.
Distribution and ecology. This species is known from China (Yunnan), Laos (Khammouane), Myanmar (Sagaing Region and Shan State), and Vietnam (Ninh Binh and Son La) at an altitude of 100– 800 m. It flowers from February to March, and fruits from April to the next January. It may be considered as ‘Near Threatened’ (NT) according to IUCN criteria ( IUCN 2012).
Notes. The flowering collection A. F. G. Kerr 4840 was erroneously identified as this species by Lôc (1996a), in which its distribution was extended to Thailand and was further confirmed by Lôc and Vidal (2001). However, this gathering has asymmetric leaflets, which is an important feature of Huchimingia ichthyochtona and was correctly cited by Craib (1928). Recently, Mattapha (2020) also recorded this species (as Millettia podocarpa ) in the Flora of Thailand, but described it with asymmetric leaflets and a 2-ovuled ovary, which are consistent with those of H. ichthyochtona . Up to now, we did not found any specimens of H. podocarpa from Thailand. Huchimingia podocarpa is recognized by the combination of multiple characters, including 3–9 (usually 7–9) symmetric leaflets, leafy pseudopanicles, long teeth of calyx (more than 3 mm), 4-ovuled ovary, and long and woody pods (14–27 cm).
