Neosampa granulata Broun, 1921 View in CoL ( Figs. 18A View Fig , 19 View Fig , 20 View Fig , 23C View Fig )

Redescription. Male. Body length 2.18–2.40 mm, width 0.72–0.80 mm, medium-sized, subparallelsided, color reddish brown ( Fig. 18A View Fig ). Head transverse, thick, widest near eyes, narrowed ante- riorly, covered with coarse punctures and short pubescence on dorsal surface; clypeus very short, invisible in dorsal view; frons strongly elevated between antennal bases, flattened anteriorly; vertex flattened, with pair of large and round dorsal tentorial pits between eyes; postgenae large, rounded ( Fig. 19B View Fig ). Eyes small, each ovoid, composed of about 20 facets. Antennae very long and slender, 0.58–0.64 mm in length; antennomere I thick, subcylindrical, about as long as II + III; II–VI subequal in width, each subcylindrical; VII–VIII subequal in width, slightly wider than VI; IX–XI successively broadened apicad; XI largest, ovoid, relative length (width) of each antennomere from base to apex to width of antennomere I: 1.6 (1.0); 0.9 (0.8); 1.0 (0.7); 0.8 (0.7); 0.9 (0.7); 0.9 (0.7); 1.0 (0.8); 0.7 (0.8); 1.2 (0.8); 1.1 (1.0); 2.6 (1.2). Maxillary palpi short, elongate; palpomere I very short, broadened distally; II elongate, thickened distally; III short, nearly triangular in ventral view; IV largest, about as long as II + III, nearly fusiform.

Pronotum about as wide as head, about as long as wide, nearly circular, weakly convex, covered with coarse punctures and short pubescence on dorsal surface, with shallow and indistinct median sulcus, pair of short lateral longitudinal sulci, pair of large, deep lateral foveae, and pair of short transverse sulci connecting lateral foveae and median longitudinal sulcus ( Fig. 19A View Fig ). Metaventrite very large, weakly convex, densely covered with long pubescence medially ( Fig. 19E View Fig ). Elytra about as long as head + pronotum, wider than long, weakly broadened posteriorly, gently flattened on dorsal surface, each elytron sparsely covered with coarse punctures and long pubescence, with 3 basal foveae and 2 longitudinal sulci; outer longitudinal sulcus running from outer basal fovea to near middle ( Fig. 19F View Fig ). Legs long, slender; mid-tibia with very short mucro on inner side at apex.

Abdomen about as long as elytra, slightly narrower than elytra, subparallel-sided; segments IV–VII subequal in length in dorsal view; IV transverse, with pair of narrow, subparallel-sided paratergites and large, transverse basimedian concavity; tergite VIII transverse, arcuate on posterior margin; sternite VIII transverse, with large, triangular emargination on posterior margin; tergite IX divided into pair of large, triangular, apically acute sclerites; sternite IX large and lamellar, weakly arcuate on posterior margin ( Fig. 20C View Fig ). Male genitalia weakly sclerotized; median lobe bulbous at base, narrowed and bifurcate at apical part; parameres paired, asymmetrical ( Fig. 20D, E View Fig ).

Female. Body length 2.10–2.40 mm, width 0.74–0.76 mm, antennal length 1.12–1.16 mm. Similar to male in general aspect but mid-tibiae rounded on inner side at apex, without mucro.

Remarks. This is Broun species number 4039 and was described from four specimens collected by T. Hall from Boulderstone Cleek [sic] and Scarcliff, near Mount Algidus (MC) ( Broun 1921). We selected a lectotype from the syntypical series housed in the NZAC ( Fig. 23C View Fig ). The specimen labeled as follows in the BMNH is not a syntype: (4039. ♂ [hw]/ New Zealand [red underline] Broun Coll. Brit. Mus. 1922-482. //Glenhope 23 – 11-1912 [hw]/ Para-Type [round label with blue border] // Neosampa granulata . ♂. [hw].

Distribution. North Island. Wairarapa (WA), Wellington (WN). South Island: Buller (BR), Mid Canterbury (MC).

Host Ant. Prolasius advenus (Formicinae) .
